Tshirts Off When Hot?

I thought I saw a thread years ago on this but I couldn't find it, but I want to know where most stand about letting guys take their shirts off on new residential when its hot out. My wife says no, but I remember working for my old man and when he t was hot, it was shirts off. I'm interested to read your thoughts on the matter.

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

I'm torn on the topic. I don't really like it for me but that's a body image thing. When I had my own operation I said no unless it was really hot. My current boss provides uniforms (t shirts) and is fairly strict about leaving it on and wearing it rather than a non company shirt. Guys push it sometimes on hot days. What do you mean by new residential? As in subdivision work? If so I wouldn't care what they wore. An occupied Reno however with client interaction is a different story.

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

My people (one of the painters is a woman) shirts on

Subs it's dependent on the situation. They all been with me long enough to know if we are building a house or doing a remodel in a neighborhood they need to look as pro as they should for what they are doing.

If we are on an unoccupied ranch or at my house or a rental or something I don't care if the carpenters or painters or roofers dont want to wear shirts if it's hot. If a tile guy is running around inside the semi finished house on a paying job no.

If I tell someone to put their shirt back on they do. Never been a problem.

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

By new residential I'm referring to brand new home, non occupied. A remodel or interior work shirts are a must.

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

Whenever I see a crew without shirts, it looks like a bunch of drunks doing side work.

The 70's called and want their dress code back.

Back in the day on a siding crew. One guy was pretty fit, ex marine said he removes his shirt for the (female) customers benefit. Told him I leave mine on for the same reason...

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

Best I get is a farmers tan. Most of my body has not seen daylight or sun in 50 yrs. Lots of times long sleeve with T shirt. Try to stick to cotton / cotton blends.
Have had guys work for me, shirt off gets burnt can't work next day, so leave them on.

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

It is a big misconception that no shirts keep you cooler in hot weather;with one exception. That exception is during intense exercise. The definition of that would be running, bicycle racing,or calisthenics. Hanging siding, roofing, laying brick would not count. The reason being, the sun on exposed skin adds heat to one's system, except in the above stated circumstances.

So for a modicum of decorum and health it is better to present a professional appearance .

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

Do not be autistic guys. Depend at situation. If you do framing in a new development you can do it. If you work across some store you can't. Of course that landscapers can not take shirt of as they work in someone yard.
Btw in summer I work, go to store, go to bars in tank tops (last one if hot in evening too). Woven one like levis.

Bro at this forum we are all fit. Otherwise would not be pro in construction for life. I didn't have ounce of fat in my life.

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

T-shirt acts like a mini cooler when it gets soaked with sweat.

Same thing as pouring water on it.

Dam near everybody now days wears orange or lime green shirts for visibility/safety even small residential guys.

If you are in to seeing no T shirts go to one of them bars after work....

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

I use long sleeve shirts during the hottest days. I'll take hot and sweaty over hot, sweaty, and burnt.

Re: Tshirts Off When Hot?

There is a big difference when it comes to a dress code, and how your construction workers look in front of your customers... Some look more attractive than others.
