Which Truck Canopy/topper Do You Like?

Hey guys,

Shopping for a canopy for my truck. The Leer I had on my previous truck was fine (until the clearcoat peeled) , just curious what some of you have chosen ... brand, options, experience etc.

I'm thinking of going with side access doors this time.

Several brands in my area to choose from, don't want to pick the wrong one.

After looking online, I see lots of poor reviews of A.R.E. canopies.

I always put a topper on my pickups, last two have been ARE brand and are pretty good toppers. Seems like the locks tend to go bad on a lot of toppers, they've held up well on these.

My favorite topper accessory is one of those aluminum boat docking hook poles. Cut it to length so it sits right on top of the bed rail and it comes in real handy for grabbing stuff at the front of the bed, saves crawling in and out.

Mine is a 15 year old A.R.E. It has held up pretty well. 2 of the side windows have started to leak in a driving rain but...I've been happy. The paint and locks are still in great shape.

docking hook poles...made my own with an 8' length of conduit. Put a bike handle bar grip on one end...drilled a hole into a dowel, cut the head off a 10" long carriage bolt...bent it to a 90* 3" down and screwed it into the hole with some epoxy...drove that down into the conduit and voila. Handy gadget.

Re: Which Truck Canopy/topper Do You Like?

I bought a brand new HD Series ARE, colour match, no tool boxes, t-handle rear door with Bolt lock.

The colour match was great, could really use a wet sand and a buff, but the paint job was better than expected. The rear door doesn't have the same finish so it looks out of place. I think it's just a black door off the rack. For the price I paid I expected the door to have the same quality finish.

Whoever installed the door put the tabs that the locking bars engage with about a 1/2" too high. It still works but it's not right. On the right side the installer stripped on of the screws and the tab was loose. This was right from brand new...

The LED strip with tilt switch was a $350 option, and it was installed crooked as hell...like c'mon.

So here's the thing...I don't know if it was ARE that dropped the ball...or if it was the installer that did the light and door. The cap itself is a great fit...so no complaints there...

Question for you guys that put toppers on pickups, why wouldnt you just get a van?

You are basically turning a pickup into a suburban by putting a topper on it

Re: Which Truck Canopy/topper Do You Like?

I have a colour matched ARE cap. About 5 years old. Some bubbling around the rear door lock handle but the rest still looks good. Locks and seals are still great. No real complaints.

I would happily trade it for a van but I need the rear seat for the kids. Pick up over suburban so I can keep a nice clean quiet cab while the hauling some awful **** around.

I do have a cargo ease bed slide. Don't pull it out too often but it is nice too have it when needed. I would use the slide more if I ever add side tool boxes...

It was a stupid decision and I regret it.

I actually preferred my DiamondBack tonneau cover that I had before the cap, it was like having a mini flatbed.

4wd, towing capacity, luxury car ride.

I didn't need any of that so I got a van.

Re: Which Truck Canopy/topper Do You Like?

I had a Knapheide (sp) steel topper on one truck. The topper was great, but it was heavy. Sure the weight lowers your gas mileage, but the big thing was what it did to my truck bed. It broke the sides loose from the front of the bed. I know another guy that had one do the same thing.
It was a tall topper, so it was heavier than normal.

I also had a ARE aluminum topper. I think the model was DCU. It was good. Had no problems with it.

Both had side doors with tool boxes on the inside. The back doors lifted up and had a window in them. Window in the front as well. I prefer the lift door to the barn door style. If you need to carry something 10' long, you can leave the door up.

I have one of the higher end Leer caps with the "luggage rack". I have some issues with water getting in, and I need to readjust the cap after a couple years of putting lumber on top. When they installed it, they wired the dome light so I can only use it when the headlights are on

Overall I'm happy with it though. I've had it 4.5 years, finish is still good on it

Can you use a gooseneck hitch with the diamondback tonneau. Doesn't look like a good idea, but I've been curious about that.

Doubt it, the rigid part goes right across the middle of the bed...right over the axle.

That is a valid point. I chose the truck / canopy combo so that I am able to tow my excavator (and such) , and, resale is better with a truck, and, as previously mentioned, you don't have to listen to all your stuff rattle around behind you.

Thanks for the input y'all.

For me lack of 4x4 is a deal breaker.

Re: Which Truck Canopy/topper Do You Like?

I have a LEER, ten years old and the back window leaks so my knees get wet when I climb in after a heavy rain.

Unlike a van, you can put long stuff, smelly stuff, dangerous stuff back there and it won't bother you.

Multi state summer trips with my boys in the backseat and all their horrendously smell lacrosse gear in a separate area in the back made it all worthwhile. That smell in an enclosed car after 4 games in 90 degree heat would have permanently funkified my interior.

That being said, A hard cover that could be removed might be a better option because you can remove it for tall or bulky loads.
