I feel ya, you sound like me, that you take pride in your work, and probably love to be creative, but its hard to do good work at bottom dollar, and rare that you get the chance to be creative(those are dream jobs to me)

Yesterday I visited a client who wanted $7000 worth of work done but had a budget of $5000, and I was "the guy they wanted to make it happen". You cant help but get tired of the game sometimes.... Makes you feel like a used car salesman.... And I hate sales.

Re: Tired Of My Trade. Don't Think I Want To Do It Anymore

I was a gc for 15 years. 12 year round employees, another 4 or 5 in the summer. 2 locations, 2 offices, etc etc. Company grew to large and i hated it. Still loved the trades just hated my company. It made me a **** ton of money, cant complain about that but i was stressed to the max, working 70-80 hrs a week.

So I sold the company, all large equipment, all my vans, trucks, trailers etc. I kept enough tools to outfit one van. Took the family on a long road trip to disney world. Got back and took another 3 months off. Then I took a supervisor job in a plant. Wasnt happy working for someone else. And I missed the trade too much. So now I am back at it but I only work by myself, and I only do int stuff. Drywall, flooring, trim etc. No more huge jobs for me. I dont over book myself, and i take about a week off every month.

Point is people thought I was crazy for selling my successful buisness but I had to do what made me happy. Running the large company was just not for me anymore.

I am happy now, enjoying life and I have no stress.

If you love the trade and tired of all th buisness bs making find a job working for someone else. Maybe go work at lowes or depot for awile, see how you like that. Just do whatever makes you happy

Good luck

Re: Tired Of My Trade. Don't Think I Want To Do It Anymore

Honestly, let me put it this way...If I work myself, then my employees will have to stay home...I can double their digits IF I WANT TO...

Thats why I earned to sit in the office...besides having a little bit of a brain...

Surely they can stucco 600-1000 sq ft a day on straight run,but they will be hurting tomorrow. I can do that and not hurt.

I think I have done my fair share of manual labor and I still do it 40% of the time if the budget is not big enough or job is interesting.

Rather than that,I prefer sitting in the office. Its as challenging as being on the wall.

Re: Tired Of My Trade. Don't Think I Want To Do It Anymore

P.s. I went to put in 14 blocks today on sloping retaining wall...took me 5 hours to gut the section and re-do it with grouting, tooling and what not.

I made 600$ after materials and overhead,it took me 3 hours of actual work(or 5 with running around).

Sure its great, but why wouldnt I want to make less and not be in the sun busting my ass with heavy ass blocks?...

I'm 48, been needing pills for the last thirteen years. Norgesic is my latest and greatest...

In all seriousness though, you guys in this business who haven't hit 30 don't have a clue what real pain is. Just shooting from the hip but I would say 90 percent of us will end up crippled in some way before our working lives are over. Food for thought.

Yeah I know what you mean, I know some people that are in their 70's and will easily outwork people in their 20's, not by their physical abilities(although sometimes its the case), but by with their work attitude/ethic. I find there's a huge generation problem with young workers right now, that will probably be fixed/weeded out by harder times. Young people are too busy answering texts, facebooking, trying new drugs, and playing video games to give a **** about work.
