Stainless Scratch Repair...


Any one know of a good way to fix an against the grain scratch on SS?

60 grit on a belt sander will buff it right off.

Just sand paper and stainless cleaner. Steady strokes with the grain. Depending on how deep the scratches are i only use 80,120,320 and a grey Brillo pad to do the final blending. Comes out tits.

Unfortunately it rarely works on appliances. Most have some kind of coating over the SS

Yeah def don't try this with 99% of appliances. They normally have the clear coat over them and you will make it 10x worse

And even still, if in the right location and the right aerosal paint, it can be done. A good way to determine if its real stainless or not is to stick a magnet to it. If it falls off then its real stainless. Magnet sticks, its a swap out.

That's only true if you're testing for austenitic stainless, like type 304. There are plenty of ferritic stainless alloys which do display magnetic properties.
