Split Jamb Interior Doors

Who the F thought this was a good idea? I'm in Nashville six months and starting to change out the interior doors. Haven't found a lumberyard near me yet so my choices are the two big box stores both of which only stock the split jamb type.

Never seen them before I moved down here I figure it must be the way to go since they all have them.

They make no sense. Why do I want you to choose my door trim for me? Why the F is it STAPLED to the jamb?! Those holes will be fun to fill. Plus if you take off the trim you have to pull every dang staple. Oy.

I need to find a reputable lumberyard down here.

I used to have a great supplier-Northeast in NJ. Need to start searching. I know you get what you pay for but I just want some decent six panel interior doors.

Rant over.

These doors have been around for the last 10 years if not more. In NJ you can make a choice of the casing when ordering the whole house.

Interesting. I haven't seen a split jamb in at least ten years; absolutely no one around here stocks them.

Re: Split Jamb Interior Doors

yea , i haven`t installed any in about 20 years

the concept seems so right .
but when installing them , they`re just crap.

how many do you need?

do you have the skill to make your own frames?
thats what i would do. would take maybe an hour per frame ,if your doing multiple at a time

tell your client
" there's spit jambs , or i can make you better frames that will hold up much better over the years "

Re: Split Jamb Interior Doors

When I first started, boss dropped these off and said there ya go.

I thought WTF is this all about?

About 5 minutes later, I looked like a kitten with a ball of yarn.

Sure as I say they were the most awful thing I ever worked with, someone will describe how they are easier to install than putting on slippers.

But na-na, not for me.

Every commercial office space we did, those were what we had to use.

I use to buy everything from Blackstone Lumber until Builders First Source bought them out...
After Builders First Source closed East Coast division, everyone scattered all over the place, so I start dealing with Woodhaven and Pro-Build lumber since a few of my salesmen went there.
Now Builders First Source is back, they bought out Pro-Build so I'm dealing again with them.

Re: Split Jamb Interior Doors

I had never seen them before. Always hated doing doors. Not my best skill. Still I don't get the appeal. The molding is hacked when you get them.

I'm going to seek out what I'm used to.

These are for my own house. i "retired" down here and now I'm renovating top to bottom, on my own. Man I miss having help. Already called and cursed out my tile guy and my plumber, telling them how much doing their job sucks. Now I can curse my old painters and trim carpenters.

Re: Split Jamb Interior Doors

Regional thing - ran into those farther south but found a lumber yard that built their own & kept in stock... For big box stores you can special order regular jambs in, just like everyone else can order split jambs if they are so inclined. Biggest trick - shim behind hinge area to get plumb & install - attach long screws through & your good. The other side if needed & brads won't work - trim screws to pull in tight / push back out

Re: Split Jamb Interior Doors

we used them in our houses back in the 90s when I was in building trades in high school. Thats the only time I've ever seen them used; and I hated them. Way too flimsy for my liking

Alright Mr. smart-ass.

Hows it going over there in your part of this fine state, is it beating you up? We didn't have rain yesterday until 11PM or so. Only day in the last 7 it didn't.
