Snakes

Any interesting stories about snakes that you have come across on jobs? I choose to work in mostly remote locations and until this job... haven't seen many snakes. So far... in the past week I have seen a copperhead, water moccasin and two non-poisonous.

Re: Snakes

once when I first started I crawled right on top of a bunch of baby snakes under a deck...

now everytime I get ready to crawl around in leaves or what not I fire up the leaf blower and clear any nasty little buggers outta there...

I can't stand snakes.

Mowed what I assume was a garter a few days ago. No head on him. But the body was still kind of moving. Bummer.

Re: Snakes

All the time. Gators and manatees on occasion too. Sometimes I have to grab my rod and fish lunch away on the good canal and private beach jobs depending on time of year.

Was oiling a deck the other day, look up and an indigo (BIG black snake) is staring at me about 2' away, ballsy bastard bunch they are but they eat the pygmy rattlers so it's all good. He only stuck around hoping I would scare out a lizard and when he realized I wouldn't, he left.

Sometimes out towards center state we see the big eastern diamondbacks... They don't make it through the job. Watch out for them cottonmouths, nasty aggressive bunch. Had one swim across the river after me in Ginnie springs after disturbing it.

Re: Snakes

As a kid I was peddling away in Lake Mills Iowa. Saw a gardener snake and got him and proceed to my friends house to show him what I have..
Snake got mad going downhill with his head mashed into my handlebar and decided to wrap itself up around my arm!
I freaked, jumped a curb and hit a tree. The bike was trashed and the snake was gone. Some old lady seen me bleeding out in her yard and called my Dad! She's trying to stop my nose from bleeding and Dad shows up with his truck, Thanked the lady and threw my bike into the back. Lets go!
Got a talkin to from him later,
" Son, On the side of my truck is Skogen brothers construction company Don't that again"

LOL! Sorry but that my only snake story that relates!

I can handle working in live electrical panels, stupid heights, dirt/grime, spiders, mean dogs, mean women etc. without a flinch. But snakes freak me out! I have no idea why.

Groundsnake. It was a pretty cool little dude. He was about 16"-18" long. I always want to keep stuff like that but I know I have no right. So I let him go.

Re: Snakes

We had a stray cat adopt a job site one time, along with the dead birds, it brought a us a cotton tail rabbit and a garter snake.

Re: Snakes

I love snakes and miss them so out here As a kid I'd catch them and sell to the pet shops in south Fla. for pocket money.

Re: Snakes

When I find a snake in my yard...I get the biggest shovel I can find and...and...and scoop it up and toss it in the neighbors yard. It's not in me to kill one...I just don't like 'em.

Re: Snakes

When working around me the best advice came from a former employee. He would say "If you see a snake, get the hell out of the way so you don't get hit with the shovel."
