Smoke Rated Door Frames

I need smoke rated hollow metal frames on an existing building. Can these be added to existing frames or do I need new HM frames?

Re: Smoke Rated Door Frames

I'm familiar with "fire rated" but never heard the term "smoke rated" when discussing hollow metal doors and frames. The fire rating of the wall assembly determines what type of fire rated door is required, and there are several, the architect or engineer typically specifies the rating required on the door schedule or specs and a competent door supplier will provide you with the correct doors and hardware.

You could get yourself into trouble trying to reuse old HM door components (frames), as the door and frame are considered an assembly and and there will be rating labels somewhere on the door, frame, or both.

Re: Smoke Rated Door Frames

Not sure how you would retrofit smoke frames to an existing door. From what I know smoke rated doors and frames have a gasket and are self closing.

Re: Smoke Rated Door Frames

Smoke rated doors are spec'd to protect an egress corridor that is usually within a rated fire corridor.

However, they are rarely used and a fire rated door is installed in its place.

In my experience you will not be able to retrofit an existing frame to the required rating.

Doors and frames come rated from the manufacturer with an attached metal label.
