If I was getting 95% of the jobs I quote I'd revisit my prices.

Two reasons here. I couldn't possibly do all those jobs.
The other. If I was spending 8 hours on 5% of the jobs I don't get that'd be about 24 hours of wasted time every week. I have better things to do.

What software you using? I'm currently working from excel spreadsheets I made. They work great but I'm ready to move on to something a little better.

Well we have a different business model as I have to do vastly lower volume of work as I make good money working on me own. People ain't hiring me because I'm cheap as I'm not. Not anywhere near cheap Infact and always at the upper end of the pricing when I see other quotes. Sometimes double but it's still not stopped me from getting work. again recommendations play a big part in this as they have already seen my quality of work.

The 95% is just a random figure in giving. I can almost count on 1 hand the jobs I haven't got I priced since moving here. It was a slow start though. All work was Familey work for first 2 years but a lot of people see that work which was handy for me.

Oh yeah and we both know your not pricing 60 jobs a week Mike. Exaggeration much!

8hrs per job at your 3 jobs 5% means that you at 60 jobs a week and the 3 you didn't get is the 5%.

I couldn't live without it. There's a bit of a learning curve but it's worth learning.

Every quarter I send a file to my bookkeeper she can fix all my quickbooks screw ups send me back a file that I download back into quickbooks and it fixes everything.

Awesome software.

I been meaning to get quick books sorted. Every year I get a better system together which ends up quicker and with less paper work. When I find time I will get on it. I was trying to find someone to do me a profile but no one in this area dies them and last time I tried a demo version I couldn't figure it out at all.

Right now I'm just using Excel. Wrote a small program to track my expenses. At the end of the quarter I just print out the numbers.

Man it took me forever, until my bookkeeper got tired of all my screwups, she came to my house and held my hand for hours. Now my bank accounts are connected directly into it.

I've got my quickbooks pretty organized. I've had my bank accounts attached since the beginning so everything is pretty easy to reconcile. I know there's more I could do with it but don't have the time yet.

Re: Silence After Giving Quotes.

I usually don't charge for quotes for calls from referrals or past clients. I do screen them(even referrals) on the phone. If they sound like tire kickers or just plain cheap I tell them I charge $40 for a quote but deduct it from my quote if I do the work. That sends the time wasters packing in a hurry.

As far as the original question, yes I do know people I give quotes to do not owe me nothing. It's up to them if they want to tell me no thanks or not, but it's also a courtesy that takes but 30 seconds in the form of an e-mail. I figure least they can do is take 30 seconds of their time after I've given up 2 hours of mine.

Re: Silence After Giving Quotes.

my new rule
estimates are free over the phone.
home visit with quote and consultation will have a $25 fee reimburse if they go with me. I put way to much energy and time in to consulting. if they cant afford $25 bucks, then good just filtered a time waster!

if i go out of business even better
It was a rough week.

I've lived in Colchester and Glastonbury. They were both in Connecticut, though.
