Ripping Off Quads

So my big brother is a quadraplegic, lives in Chicago.
He bought a house 5 years ago, it had a 10 year old roof with 30 year shingles. Now it's shot, he has to replace it.
He calls a big roofer to look at it and their salesman explains the problem. Bad install, bad shingles. It turns out they installed it. "Not his problem" "shouldn't have installed shingles over old ones, shouldn't have installed valley over old shingles, shouldn't have installed ice and water shield over old shingles. . ."
He offers him NOTHING. On top of that his quote is 30% higher than anyone elses.
I suggested contacting the manufacturer about 1/2 life of shingles(pro-rated warranty?) and sending a letter the BBB(roofer is a member) cc to him.
What would you do, any suggestions to keep him from getting ripped off?dependant

Re: Ripping Off Quads

He's 15 years into the roof. Doubt he has any recourse on the workmanship.

Depending on shingle manufacturer, he may or may not have a case there. I believe GAF has a transferable warranty, but not sure about 15 years ago.

It sucks I know, but he is probably getting ready to pay for a new roof.

BTW, I don't do layovers

Wayfarer,
Get in touch with Grumpy or Ed the Roofer.
They are in a position to advise your brother.

Aren't warranties different for layovers?

What does your Brother being a Quad have to do with the equation?

Re: Ripping Off Quads

Point taken Malco, if someone is a crook who does crappy work, they don't care if they rip of a senior citizen, quadraplegic or just an ordinary guy.
My thoughts are that if they are the most expensive at least do good work with good materials even if they homeowner can't check it out.

Re: Ripping Off Quads

Manufacturers got smart. No gaurantee without proper ventilation.
That many years ago venting was not a requirement for a permit.
Today I am required to bring the venting (including B vents) up to code.
30% above the original only means it wasn't bid properly in the first place.
Let the buyer beware.
