Re: Read 'Getting Things Done By David Allen'

Yeah, but does it work?
Allen may have good intentions, but can and will people do it?

It reminds me of those exercise program videos.
What percent of people can put out that much energy at that rate?
Do they stick with the program?

If you want to burn energy, do Burpees, no video needed.

You'd be right if his methods were based on some sort of psychological approach. But they're not. Really, the book is just a very concrete explanation of "here's how to organize your stuff." It's just a system, nothing to do with anything that would involve a psych lab.

Here's what I know. Before reading the book, I didn't have a system for organizing my work. And I really didn't have a great idea of how to build a good system. This book gave me a fantastic starting point, and I've refined little pieces of it to perfectly fit my needs.

So no, the placebo effect is not at all a factor. Does this book contain some mythical lost productivity secretes to make you 10,000 more efficient? No. Is it a great starting point for anyone looking to get organized? Absolutely.

I started reading the book, got about halfway through, then realized I could be out there actually "getting stuff done" ... lol

Not discrediting the advise in the book or his system. But reading about it won't build you a deck.

To the skeptics: Ever been on a two stoke dirt bike. There is what is called the power band. The power band is the point in the rpm range that the engine makes the most power. It is usually the point where climbing horsepower meets peak torque.

When I am actively applying his principles I operating in the "power band" from a business standpoint. I'm making maximum use of time with minimal stress. You are confident and in control, your mind is working at its creative maximum unhindered by the many cares of business life that can bog you down, and most importantly you're getting things done, aka, makin money.

When I start letting his methods slip by not staying on top of organization and cutting off loose ends its the equivalent of trying to make a corner on a dirt bike in a gear way to high, you have the throttle pinned, but you are bogged down and going nowhere no matter how hard you twist the handle.

Thats the best explanation I can give as to how his methods work for me.

We live in a day where most any kind prominent, established person or public figure is not what they seem to be at face value. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the dudes wack. Imo most people who are in the profession of psychology are....still doesn't mean I don't like some of his thoughts.

Ad hominem argument. Furthermore, the question about these types of things is never whether they are "true", but whether they have value to someone.

Re: Read 'Getting Things Done By David Allen'

GTD is not some psycho-babble BS, religion, or cult, it is a very well respected time and task management method, embraced by many of the Fortune 50 companies. I have been a follower of it for several years, it really helps me stay focused on the important things in my company. At any one time I have 7-9 very large (8,000-10,000 sq ft and larger) custom homes under construction, I have an unbelievable amount of detail and information to manage daily. My company is only me, an experienced project manager, a newbie building superintendent, and a semi-part time person in the office. Thatís it. I have to be extremely organized to make my building program work, not only the construction part but the marketing, accounting (I do in-house), client interface & communication, and the entire business side of the operation. GTD has helped me immensely, I could not do the volume I do without the methods espoused by David Allen, founder.

I went from doing 4-5 million$ a year to $10 million and higher in annual business, many things contributed to this, right at the top of that list has been the following and implementing of GTD for task management. I would encourage anyone who wants to step up their efficiency and production to take a look at this.

Correct. Ad hominem circumstantial, to be specific. You have to address Mr. Allen's arguments, not his circumstances which are irrelevant.

What's that old saying... "when the student is ready, the teacher appears"...

Seems like the OP was ready and actually acted on what was suggested to an apparently huge benefit to him...

Another person reading that same book, if they aren't ready and aren't convinced they need to do something, the book will most likely not have the same impact...

The system only makes sense when you embrace and implement it... whether it be this, Demming, Sigma-six, etc...

None of them are a Nirvana, just a tool to do what you do better and more efficient...

.

A lot of wisdom in those statements.

Re: Read 'Getting Things Done By David Allen'

Any system requires some self discipline. If you can see the value to you, and you have enough self discipline, there are a lot of ways to boost your productivity and reduce stress at the same time.

Managing fundamentally is getting results through people. For some reason, a lot of people think they can manage a business without learning how to manage themselves. It can be done, but it just isn't even a logical approach.

I try to minimize the lies I tell myself in order to get through life, but I guess everyone needs a crutch once in a while.
