Please Tell Them To Leave.

Buddy of mine calls me up today to come look at the work two guys have been doing for him in his basement. He hired them because they were cheap and could start right away. Two major red flags that I warned him about. I told him I couldn't start for 3 weeks, but he was anxious. Guess who is going to be tearing it all out?
The first thing I noticed when I walked downstairs was that the crown had been installed on the flat by the ceiling. It was even up side down. I asked one of the guys sanding drywall how it was going, and he said he'd been sanding for 3 days. I said nothing, turned around, went upstairs and told my buddy to please make them leave. I'll be over in a week to tear it out.
Now of course, I'm in even more of a bind because he's a close friend who's lost money, thus I'll be losing money because I can't charge him like normal.
If people would just listen from the start....

Re: Please Tell Them To Leave.

crown on the flat? you must be joking. Even drunk HO's know that's wrong. they might not know whats wrong, but they know.

Holy cow. I did a "charity" re-do on crown the other week. A lady and her partner got some advise from HD......... sigh..

Anyway they posted their work on CL. It drove me nuts, so I drove over to their place and showed them how to cut/install. I did the hard parts for them. I blame the info that they got from HD, crap I think the "associates" might have read a book on installing crown, but they sure haven't done it.

My favorite job that I batted cleanup for was one where they couldn't cope the crown corners, so they just ran all the boards short a foot from the corner, then intended to patch in when they figured out how to make it work.

Spectacular.

That was easier than tearing it all out, and starting over?

A man's gotta know his limitations, though that's a funny place to make the decision.

I always look at trim in restaurants, and I've seen crown on the flat a bunch of times in little neighborhood joints.

Re: Please Tell Them To Leave.

I don't understand why you feel you owe your "friend" any kind of break. He made a decision, no reason anyone but him should be paying for those decesions. Enable their delusions and they only repeat their bad behavior.

Before you say easier said than done, a neighbor/friend hired someone else to do some work for outdoor living area. He called told me he was unhappy with a few conduit bends, stopped by his house on my way home, 2 offset bends, 5 minutes, had no problem telling him $50.00. Collected, got in my truck, drove 2200 feet to get home.

He already told me I'm doing their whole home generator with a load shedding switch. I think he's learning his lesson.

I have to admit that I do offer a discount, to my parents and children. It's 100%, my children will not accept the discount and my parents do not have the option of declining it.

The discount friends get is the piece of mind knowing the job will be done properly.

Friends would ask me for computer advice... so I would advise them, and then they would go to the computer store and buy the cheapest one. Unfortunately it is human nature... Then after a month or two they call and want to know why the new game they bought does not work properly...

Re: Please Tell Them To Leave.

It's a good point several of you have made concerning how much I should charge on this one. The more I think about it, I really shouldn't give a discount that hurts me. I did warn him beforehand and yet he was determined to get it done quickly. Now it's actually going to take longer than if he'd waited for me to do it in 3 weeks.
I gotta tell you though, I felt like I was in an episode of Holmes on Homes when I went down there. Most of the remodeling I do is because things are just outdated, not because some hillbilly with a hammer screwed things up so badly. It sure is fun to complain about though. I'll send some pictures when I get started.

Re: Please Tell Them To Leave.

I have always given friends a break but some of them do not know what kind of a break you gave them and pester to make your bill cheaper. Thats when i sit them right down, show them what kind of a break they got and the price is what it is. Most often i get more work from them and they spread the word for me. Those who choose not often find out down the road what "reality" charges and then i get the call to see if i am available and can i at least meet the price or beat it.

Do what some of the larger retailers do- offer a discount off of "list" price. Some tire stores around here do that quite a bit, when you actually go to pay you figure out it's not really much of a discount.
