For what, exactly? When I hear "per diem", I think more in terms of what you pay your guy extra for each day he works away from home.

Re: Per Diem

"Per Diem?!?! You already get a flippin' paycheck!!!"

Ha ha... one of my favorite quotes from one of my first employers.

I pay my guys $40 when we do travel. Figure $5ish for breakfast, $10ish for lunch and $15ish for dinner. Extra $10 for those little things (ie. BEER) that always come up on the road.

I know lots of companies that pay as little as $20 or $25. May sound like enough, but if you want to eat better than the 99 cent heart attack sack every meal... $25 doesn't go very far.

I think the base government rate is $39 for meals and incidentals, $60 for lodging.

City by city rates at this link:

Well... apparently I'm barred from posting URL's. Bummer.

It says I can't post urls until I have 15 posts... and since I was at 14... I did this.

Re: Per Diem

We get $35.00 a day for working out of town. And seems fair considering you can have breakfast for $2.99 (the special of course), lunch for $4.99 (the special again), and supper of your choice for whatever price.... There's usually enough left over to have a few beer in the lounge after supper. That all seems fair if you are working away from home... Works for us...

Re: Per Diem

Consider, too, that your per diem is to cover not only eating, but doing your laundry while out of town. It also covers all the incidental things you take for granted at home that you might have forgotten like shampoo and Tylenol, that you'd have to buy on the road.
