Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

I'm really worrisome about OSB. It might be rated for whatever but in all the hurricane aftermath I've ever been to, the OSB always fails more often. Could be that siding gets torn off and then you got exposed OSB getting pelted with hours of wind and rain and gradually weakens it.

For what it's worth, they are spec'ing it all over the place here now. Everything is going back to OSB. Crazy world we live in. For about 10-15 years while I was framing OSB was a HUGE no-no in v-zones. Now it's commonplace again.

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

Is a New Toyota or Honda worth more then a Kia that is 15000$ cheaper?

In ten or eight years of salty roads it will obvious...

Eventually MOST home have water leaks from plumbing, fire sprinklers, roofs, storms, snow and ice, and criminal acts. OSB will generally have to be torn out to stud level...

If you are building throw away homes, OSB is the way. IMHO

Even the best wood sheathing can't compete with average masonry rain walls...

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

All this time I've been thinking interior shear walls. Around here if someone says shear wall, they mean inside. Outside it's a given that it's a shear wall. Today I saw OSB for less than 1/3 the cost of ply.

I miss the old plywood sub floors. I could walk the hell out of a bucket on them .

Painted plywood sub floors are sweet for bucket walking.

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

@ 44 above: Here Shear walls transfer right angle loads into the foundation through anchor hardware,
The Majority of shear walls being parts of the "envelope".

The designated SWalls having a PE stamped nailing/fastener layout.

In some Seismic Zones, Types of Gypsum panels are used to DAMPEN Earth Quake movement through their rubble-rizing the solid Gyp boards , the dampeners needed to replaced prior to reoccupation... the size and type of materials need to exactly match the test versions.

I have to wonder how much of the damage is just due to it being a poorly, quickly, or cheaply built home that used OSB because it's cheaper. The well built expensive home might have also used OSB but because they didn't cheap out on everything else you're not seeing damaged OSB there because the house is still intact.
I don't really have any idea if that is the case, but it does make sense, no? We're more likely to see cheap material fail in a cheaply built house because the whole structure failed. The house that doesn't fail we're just not seeing it either way so maybe it's ply and maybe it's OSB.

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

If OSB is getting wet it's not a problem with OSB. That's like blaming the oil in your car for the water that's in it. .

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

sooner or later everything in a home with indoor plumbing/under a roof, is going to get wet... Why use materials that can't survive getting wet to build with?

Think of the decades of cheaper insurance/repair costs.

Can any home with OSB last even Two hundred years? A hundred maybe????

My engine oil has an additive to absorb some water, which then the 205 degree Fahrenheit thermostat that "boils" the water out of the engine oil during longer trips, (helped out by the partial vacumn of on the crankcase created by the PVC system)

less H2O, in the oil, less Acids to corrode important metals like bearings and compression rings...

I've lived here 27 years never once had a leak that I didn't find out about immediately. And it sure as **** didn't get so wet it would've damaged osb . Not anymore than a rain storm during framing. Which I've been on many times without a failure. If you have a leak that last long enough to do extensive damage to your osb shear walls the shear walls are not the problem.

Now go ahead someone give me an unlikely scenario where it's more the exception. Lol!

Any length of time of consistent moisture will damage any wood product.

Some multi million dollar home frame jobs get exposed to weather for months and months and the OSB is still fine. Discolored maybe but still fine.

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

Rusty Hot water heater, bad steam valve on Heater, leaks caused by over pressure on city mains. Common in high relief terrain areas.

Old washer hoses, clothes and dish....furnace condensate lines leaking, plugged AC coil pan drains....

Water damage non-flood sourced is the 4th leading home insurance claim.

Big Johnson, I'd want plywood to used to REPLACE your damaged panels instead cornstalks....

Some one is still thinking Plywood is worth the $ upcharge, or they wouldn't sell ANY.

I have never lived or worked in a one hundred year old house.
Man they must smell musty
I didn't know the plumbing and wires lasted that long

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

lots of 4 story apartment complexes going up here in the winter with OSB. Ultimately it gets well protected with multiple redundant layers of flashing, weather resistive barriers, rain screens, siding, etc.

A plumbing leak or two in the next 100 years isn't going to condemn the building.
