Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

looking for some specs on how osb performs vrs plywood in shear walls.1/2" [10' lengths] was 48$ vrs 1/2" osb was 17$ . On that price difference I need to do a little research . Sure seems like the osb would shed those nails faster .i can imagine it tearing away but maybe with nails a good inch from the outer edge it would perform reasonable well .

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

in my experience using osb as shear is the architect/engineers call.

What griz said but I believe in many cases OSB has higher shear rating than ply.

likely depend on structure requirements, calcs and type of plywood.

Bay Area Retrofit is very generous with information, which in turn probably gets them a ton of jobs. They even have a forum where you can ask questions and they get answered. FWIW they helped write the schedule "A".

Once on link below click on:

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

It seems to me the use of 10' long or loner special order sheathing would add redundancy at a very low cost for the add strength over the rim joists.

In low rise wood structures many designers don't even realize the use of of 3" and 4" wide studs as a massive labor saver, and allows bigger cavities that = cheaper installed HVAC and higher R values in the field.

My personal experience is that a few hundred dollars spent on using thicker Plywood or OSB on walls, floors and roofs is amply rewarded in the following decades. Roof nails hold much better in 3/4" OSB then 1/2" etc.... 3/4" thick wall sheathing flattens much more of a crooked stud, saving $$ on Dry wall and finish labor....

And the wider studs have more room for nails before spliting into toothpicks

agree w/3x & 4x studs, but they have been called out on 24" or 48" oc to accommodate shear nailing.

had a job where architect called out 3x 6 studs.

due to delay in delivery i rfi'd to use 4x6 & the guy actually argued with me to use the 3x6. I did eventually win, but wtf.....

I think there is some confusion there. Nails into OSB may have a higher withdrawal force, but head pull through would be the typical fail, and pull through force tends to be less for OSB. Stiffness of plywood is also better than most OSB, so plywood is the obvious choice.

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

And here's a link that contradicts what I said - withdrawal is the same, and pull through is higher for OSB.

Now that that's cleared up....

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

I just hate OSB because it completely disintegrates when it gets wet.

I'll go for plywood any day, even with the increased cost. Probably get an extra 100 tears out of the building.

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

If the building contains ONE water pipe / fixture that WILL eventually leak, why use standard OSB ANYWHERE under the fixture/ roof?????

Ditto paper faced Drywall products..... in any plumbed area. IMHO

Re: Osb Vs Plywood In Shearwalls

I remember when I was a kid my dad made a dog door out of OSB (technically wafer board back then as it wasn’t structural) and rubber tire. I was talking to my dad about how much I hate working with OSB one day and he told me that thing lasted until they sold their house, through 2-1/2 dog lifetimes. It got wet every time it rained.

advantech is very strong stuff. It has something in it to repel water too. We use it for the whole house.
