Lowes Vs. Home Depot Vs. Local

Wanted to hear y'all's opinion on the stores. Where do you shop? Do you think local is better than one of the big boys?

Re: Lowes Vs. Home Depot Vs. Local

I would love to say that, I never darken the doors of HD or Lowes , and only use local suppliers

The reality is , the big box home improvement stores , have put the majority of those places out of business around here

I deal with local companies as much as I can . Most of the survivors are far superior, in customer service , knowlege , and quality.

If forced to use the big box , I limit my purchases to what's on the shelf.
I've learned the hard way that they will screw up your order more often than not

And never ask for help in one of these places , you won't get it

Re: Lowes Vs. Home Depot Vs. Local

Any larger order delivered it's a local yard. Just a few things, and it's wherever that has it in stock that's closest.

Sometimes local yards can be jerks. I had the BO call around recently to find out stucco availability, etc. First place called was a local yard. They started right off with they weren't ordering a pallet just to sell 2 bags.

Second was Lowes. They'd get in anything from one bag to a pallet or more, but wouldn't give a date. Ordered 4 bags from them.

Third contact was a masonry supply house in the next town over. No problem, we'll have a mini pallet into our warehouse early next week, and have it here the next day. Ordererd the minipallet from them. Delivered as promised.

Re: Lowes Vs. Home Depot Vs. Local

I have a local Hardware Store that is the best anywhere. Knowledgable staff. Great line-up of products although their paint line is average. In some cases, the prices are LOWER than the big boxes. I buy a lot of halogen bulbs for my work lights and the local hardware store has them for $3 cheaper than anything Lowe's has and they are better quality.

So, yes, I try to avoid the big boxes, but, that's almost impossible these days.

I agree with Davis about some of the local yards being jerks

I find that the more specialized supply houses are less likely to want to deal with an unfamiliar face

I think that they are pre qualifying you , based on bad experiences with walk up costumers that they have dealt with in the past

These kind of places you have to build a relationship with so they know you're not going to waste their time

All of the above, and I agree that yards and supply houses can be real pitas.

I was at the beach and needed to replace some handrails for my folks. When I asked the guy what they were made of, he looked at me and slowly said "wood". I thought about busting that guy between the eyes in front of all the spectators, but just stared back at him like he was a [email protected]

Re: Lowes Vs. Home Depot Vs. Local

Use the big box stores for smaller and miscellaneous items. Never for large items, lumber, paint or fixtures.

I am a builder, and they don’t build homes, but I am surprised at the amount of plumbers, electricians, roofers, HVAC etc. contractors purchasing large amounts of materials. When they advertise that they provide installation, replace water heaters, roofs, siding etc.

Re: Lowes Vs. Home Depot Vs. Local

I get my makita stuff from the depot, always check the clearance rack, great deals. Aside from tools I only get little stuff here and there from the box stores. For my personal house that’s where I usually get appliances.

I will also buy stocked doors from the box stores, anything that needs ordered I get from the lumber yard. I always bid nicer doors and windows for jobs but sometimes it’s not in the budget and a $500 front entry door from the depot looks just as nice as a $1200 waudena door from the lumber yard.

They are able to beat lumber yard price on their stocked items due to volume, so if you like one of their 5 options for interior solid core doors you’ll save some money.

I never buy lumber there, and I try to source everything through the local lumber yard. At the lumber yard you get good customer service, quality material, better prices, and a kickback at the end of the year based on how much you spent.

Re: Lowes Vs. Home Depot Vs. Local

I do my best to support local.
But sometimes I just can’t
do it. Local got bought out by a large corporation that got bought out by a larger corporation, my discount got cut from 20-30% down to 5-%.
A lot of guys in the same boat.
I went from spending 125 thousand , to about 20 thousand.
HD is the next stop. After other local suppliers

Re: Lowes Vs. Home Depot Vs. Local

If you need materials delivered around here from depot your screwed. They have one truck that covers 11 stores. Usually it’s 3-4 days. If your lucky you’ll get it in two days. They charge $85. And if you want to be given a delivery window it’s another $20 for them to tell you. The lumber yard will deliver free the same day if you get in by 11am in most cases, if not definitely the next day. The lumber at depot is a complete nightmare, total garbage!
