Just Closed On My Dream Home Fixer Upper Beach House!

Super Stoked!
Just got a new to me DIY special home last week. Just 5 Houses From The Ocean!!! I am truly blessed. I've got a lot of work to do to make this home all it can be. I'm going to be getting feedback from all of you to help make some important decisions along the way. So come with me as I remodel the entire interior and exterior of my dream home.

From the dark and dreary cedar tongue and groove to the Miami Dolphin green cabinets and the 1980's tile a stick down faux wood flooring it all will have to either go or get a cosmetic makeover. So join me in this adventure as I create my perfect beach house on the East Coast of Central Florida.

I'll be doing interior oil base priming and interior painting. Replacing the can lights with new led retrofit can lights, install light fixtures, new electrical switches and receptacles. Install framing and drywall, drywall finish to level 4 and texture a custom entertainment centers.. Skim coating over a botched knockdown texture in the master bathroom and vanity area. I'll also be applying an orange peel texture and skip trowel texture on a couple tape joint repairs. Then I'll be chipping out all of the old tile and installing new tile (I'll probably hire a pro for all of the flooring...).

On the Exterior I'll painting the Stucco walls, cedar siding, vinyl soffits, metal garage door, accordion hurricane shutters, repairing a few stucco cracks, painting a concrete driveway, resealing my Chattahoochee pool deck/patio and so much more... Thanks for watching and your feedback, -Paul

I'll drywall finish to level 4...

Sheesh, you're already making compromises in quality. Next you'll be using plastic on the roof instead of fixing it correctly.

Uh, and don't look at my roof. I use clear plastic so Google Earth can't see it.

If you've got to have a white ceiling, put some 1/4" drywall up first and save the natural wood for another buyer someday.

I'd do 1/2, but then again I still use 5/8 on walls

If you paint the ceiling as the wood expands and contracts you will see dark lines at the seams which may or may not drive you crazy

Congrats Paul, I love the floor plan. The room should feel brighter once the Island thing is lowered. You would know better than us as to whether or not those hot florida temps pounding the roof would cause paint peel.
I like the wood.

One of the things that attracted us to our current house was the wood paneling throughout. 30 years later, wifey is insisting that we need to replace it all with drywall.

Keep the wood, Paul.

Once it's painted you create a maintenance. The wood can hang on a long time as is.

Nice, classic surfer pad...

To clean it up and lighten it up i vote to drywall and paint the ceiling.

Have fun....

I'd use clear shellac - easy to get back off clean, seals the surface, and sticks to everything. Then paint it.

Drywall screw holes are a pita to fix.

FWIW, I do that on painted furniture / cabinets, so if someone wants to see the wood later, they can do it easily.

Wow! Thanks for all the kind words and feedback everyone! I really appreciate that.

I've been busting butt all weekend on the new place and I'm really leaning towards priming and painting that wood ceiling a nice bright white satin finish.
