Tells me I'm too expensive, and then asks if I could possibly give them the number of my roofing/drywall/tile/paint/granite/etc guy or supplier so they can just hire them directly, I'm going to hit them right in the larynx with a 2x12. Hard.
Reminds me of the saying, “Critics are like eunuchs in a harem; they know how it's done, they've seen it done every day, but they're unable to do it themselves.”
Which is the primary focus of most referral marketing campaigns. If you spend the time properly explaining what it actually takes people think "I could do that, but its going to take the rest of the year.." and they end up hiring you because you seam to know what you're talking about.
I got tired of reading this thread several pages ago, but...I've done this many times.
Give the sub the HO's info, and tell the sub to call them directly and build in a percentage for you for the referral. Problem solved if it really goes down like that, but it never does.
Sometimes your buddy/subs will score a job on their own and they will offer the percentage, but I always turn it down. It's a two way street and it all comes out in the wash. This theory may only apply to GC's who also offer a specialized trade as well, so take it with a grain of salt.
I guess it all comes down to how well you know and trust the people you work with all the time.
Rselectric is on the right track.... Either build your percentage in the subs bid or just flat out have the sub bid higher than you did so the Ho calls you back. If they question it tell them you provide all the tools and vehicle and crew.. If your sub does it he is going to have to buy all the tools and find his own capable help.thats why he charges more. Not to mention insurance, license...ect.. or just hit them w a 2x4... Actions speak louder than words anyway
