IBS In Vegas

Anyone attending? I will be there on the 19th, and free for dinner that evening or the next, if anyone wants to meet.

I'd love to but I can't make the trip due to my irritable bowl syndrome in MN.

Re: IBS In Vegas

How is it when it's in Vegas? Is it bigger or is the idea just being able to get East and West Coast people differing venues to get to?

I won't go just because how much I hate Vegas. They should do one in like Dallas or Houston where it's still warm enough but centralized for both sides.

My wife attends a lot of computer conferences. She said that there are only a few venues in the country that can hold a large conference under one roof. I believe that Vegas and Orlando are the biggest.

Re: IBS In Vegas

Vegas is the largest venue, and more exhibitors. It isn't like that with every industry, like MetalCon's show is smaller, but their market is more east of the Rockies.

I missed the World of Concrete this year, so I am ready for the break.

Yep, arrive Monday and depart Friday am. Been going since 1980, I've only missed 3-4 shows in all of those years. Taking a couple of employees this year.

Allan,

Some year I hope to make the IBS, just to meet you and thank you in person for all the help you've been to me over all these years.

Tom, that's nice of you to say, hope we can meet up someday too. IBS is a spectacular event for contractors, they have special pricing for 1st-time attendees. I think you would enjoy it.

Re: IBS In Vegas

I am here in Vegas taking pre-show courses for my Master Builder designation, and have pointed out the dual meaning of IBS to several people. Most people never made the connection. The name changed a few years back, as I think it was always the National Home Builders Show.

Orlando does not have the infastructure and systems for transportation that Vegas has, and Vegas draws the bigger crowds. I am guessing Dallas and Hueston donít have the capacity to handle it anymore?

They should add Engineering/Design to the IBS. IBS and ED convention.

Re: IBS In Vegas

Hi Adam, we've met before at IBS. I believe you are Dan Devol's friend. I think at one time it was simply called "The Builder's Show"? I've attended these shows in Orlando, Vegas, Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas. I think Orlando & Vegas for sure have the largest and best convention centers, I'm happy they rotate between those 2 places. Although if they kept it in Vegas every year, wouldn't hurt my feelings.

I've never attended the pre-show classes but I understand they are very good.

For me Orlando is great, only a 2 hour drive. I built Advantage Lumbers display last year. I won't do that again... Not enough time and too much to do.

Funny the extreme opposite opinions people have about Vegas. I can't stand it personally. I like Atlanta and Houston a lot. Last year it seemed like Orlando was slower than normal.

Re: IBS In Vegas

Alan -

We have met before at the Builders Central Network/Cocktail Hour get together. I hope to see you this year as well.

I have found those events, chatting with other builders before seminars, classes or while sharing a table while grabbing a bite to eat, are very informative and productive. I always discover and learn new things to integrate in my own business.

I remember shows in all the cities you mentioned. I think my first show and first trip to Vegas, was around 1990. My Dad gave me $50 to have some fun gambling.

Adam, I agree the Central's are great meeting areas. And you can get free breakfast, lunch, and evening meal! Not great food but sometimes not bad.

Deckhead - I always look forward to coming to Vegas, and always look forward to going home. As one of my brothers noted about Vegas, “You can see everything that is wrong with America anywhere you look”.

Do they have much there for commercial and civil? Or is it mostly for home builders?

Try going to a show in Dallas, you can't get a hotel near by, last time I paid 250 a night to stay half a mile away and had to walk by the sketchiest bus station and McDonald's I've ever seen in my life.

Vegas is the best trade show venue. Tonnes of hotels, great food.

Re: IBS In Vegas

I believe they changed the name a few years back, to encompass the building industry, as opposed to just home builders. When the Great Recession came along, they teamed up with the Kitchen and Bath folks to boost attendance for both organizations.
