I Got Bumped, And I'm Not Happy About It

Electrician was supposed to come rough my bathroom yesterday.

Snow day, these things happen.

Instead of getting backed up until today though he bumped me to Friday! Pshaw!

The nerve of these people.

So what's good on the internet?

Then the work of convincing them that watching Casablanca on a laptop IS actually part of the process begins.

Re: I Got Bumped, And I'm Not Happy About It

I'm of the opinion that it is not acceptable to take a day off from a remodeling job. They need to see my face every day.

Even if I'm just showing up and delivering some materials to the site I want to be there to say hi, answer questions, give updates, that sort of thing.
I have no idea whether this is normal or not because I never asked anybody if it was normal or not.
Got there this morning, gave them the updated subcontractor schedule, asked them where I could store the tub until the plumbers arrive, said I was headed out to pick up more supplies. I'll do that, sure, but I'm sitting in Starbucks right now planning out the rest of my day. Reasonably how long can it take to buy a vanity light fixture?

Any light fixture or the correct light fixture? Meaning one that the homeowner likes. I always let them get it, I will install it.

PS- dont forget bulbs and get the correct wattage. No matter what I picked they wanted more or less light. Countless times I have asked for bulbs when installing the light and they were not there. Now I put 1 60w in and they can do the rest

Easy, from an outside perspective, you need to get a handle of your schedule... you are bleeding money...

Agreed.

I thought I had a handle on it, then snow happened? I don't know.

It was supposed to be:

Tuesday - Electrician
Wednesday - Insulation/Roof Vent(yes, that will probably take me a while - worst roofer)
Thursday - Plumber
Friday - Rock/Tape
Saturday - more taping
Sunday - Tile

Now it's:
Friday - Electrician
Tuesday - Plumber
Wednesday - Poverty

Plumber just called and told me Tuesday is the new Thursday. Weak.
I'm still doing alright. They'll have their bathroom in a hair over 3 weeks, which is what's in the contract. On budget too. I really wanted to be the hero and deliver in 2.5 though.

I would reschedule Poverty.

But seriously, look at the weather forecast. Plumber could be your next problem. Any way to get him there on the weekend?

Kap is right.

You need to meet with your subs individually and set your expectations and find out theirs. I do it when i hire them.

On large jobs or small i do professional scheduling, with Project. The subs are given a lot of notice of when they are needed, on a big job months. I have to move stuff around due to change orders, so i get creative and dont bitch when they move me around on a big job. I still hit my projected date.

Small jobs like a bathroom, i tell them i dont move anything. If you dont show when you say i call the next guy on my list. If he takes the job, your out on your ass for the next big job too. Thats only fair.

Snow day, obviously no work. But if i get bumped so they can go to another job after that, ill be be calling my back up sub. Thats how i switched electricians 3 years ago, one small job.

Lots of subs dont fit that model and i understand, completely. We just aren't a good fit. Thats okay.

Re: I Got Bumped, And I'm Not Happy About It

I totally get how it happens. It's not like the whole schedule just gets shifted a day to the right. If Tuesday is a no-go you're going to move Tuesday's job, not Tuesday,Wednesday, and Thursday.

Just feeling very helpless sitting here with nothing to do. I've got a couple little $300 bangers I think I'm going to knock out tomorrow and Saturday, so that's something I guess.

Hey, the lumber yard called just now. My storm door is in. I guess I can do that too. Hooray!

Re: I Got Bumped, And I'm Not Happy About It

I think we'd get along just fine in a professional capacity.

Gotta say, after flirting with this GC lifestyle for about 6 months now, I don't know if we're cut out for each other. I can definitely see the appeal of it, but I got into this mess to actually do work. There's too much downtime between actually cutting wood for me here. I like it better when I'm bouncing from trim job to trim job. Hanging out in the same spot for weeks at a time feels too much like work. hah

It's funny how having a check ready and back up subs seems to put you in front of the line...

Get yourself to the point where you have capital reserves to do so complimented by back up subs...

Just watch your permits...

.

Re: I Got Bumped, And I'm Not Happy About It

Getting pushed back 3 or 4 days on a 3 week bath remodel usually wouldn't work for me, especially having to go to the back of the line to wait while subs complete other jobs. The plumbing, insulation and framing inspections would have been scheduled at least a week in advance and would have to be rescheduled.

My electrician and plumber would have asked to start early, work late or do the minimum to get inspected so the walls can get closed up and defer some of the rough-in work until they come back to do the finish work.

The checks are sitting here in a neat little pile. Come and get them. I need more electricians. I have three. I booked this job back in November. Two of them said they were booked until March and the third said ok. I went with the third.
I pay instantly. I don't understand how that doesn't get me to the front of the line. Hah

Good news is I sold two jobs between posts here. Sweet sweet solo carpentry.

Re: I Got Bumped, And I'm Not Happy About It

I had the opposite problem this week. I'm doing a couple of bathrooms and I'm subbing the tile on this job. Tile-boy wanted to start today instead of Friday, so I've been bustin' it the last 2 days to get ready for him. 27 hours in 2 days has kinda worn me out, but if things don't go to chit I'll be done a couple days early and that always makes HO's happy

I get really excited for carpentry jobs. It's the dream, really, to just be a carpenter all day.

I'm in the middle of a bathroom myself. Today I shoveled so the plumber could park and get to the house and then scraped up linoleum for 3 hours. I spent an hour lugging my demo debris from yesterday out to the truck. Eventually I'll get to spend one day trimming it out. One glorious day.

I've trimmed this bathroom in my head dozens of times more. I can't wait.
Don't tell anybody, but I secretly love demo. I'm so good at it.
