I Do Not Think Doing Only Trim Carpentry Can Bring Good Money

There is just not enough of work nor technical knowledge that would protect you from massive competition. Look like job for guy that first go to U, then be truck driver then decided that like sleep at home every night. And he think then - hey I do not want work outside, nor in danger condition, I do not have license, trimming is perfect for me. No wonder that so much of propaganda is involved in that “trade” (?), anyone want to proof he is best. Worked with some experts past year who want to beat me because I reinstalled doors that customer didn‘t like how are installed. What is there? Compound cut of crown, installing doors and tangent of arch of handrail gooseneck. Meh.

You are correct if you are speaking about tract/production work.

However, truly custom stuff is still a good market if you are capable of doing the work.

I think a big part of it is your market. I could have done trim carpentry all day for the rest of my life in NYC but it wouldn't pay my bills here. Custom trim is definitely a word-of-mouth biz, in my opinion. I would get 2-3 referrals from every job I did just because it's finish work so people show it off.

Depends on , location, customers and quality concerns.

There's a difference between finish work and semi custom or custom.

Not everyone is a finish carpenter. just because they can do finish work.

Re: I Do Not Think Doing Only Trim Carpentry Can Bring Good Money

I have a buddy who trimed boxes production style, alone, he made good money for 15 years. He did 2-3 a week. I helped him on weekends for three years, when he split it like that we made 300-350 a day. He did better money wise alone, but sometimes he would get backed up. Quality was good for production, wouldnt cut it on custom and he wouldnt do custom.

His body is broke down now, he does estimates for a home improvement outfit and does taxidermy on the side.

We always do well on custom trim outs on the projects we build.

You definitely have to get the right market. Not everyone appreciates quality work. Not everyone knows what quality work looks like, until they see it.

The company finish point trim and millworks by design seem to be making it work. I think it's all about your market and finding a niche and being the best you can at it.

Funny, i have been told by many the opposite, trim is where the money is. Of course, that work is not tract homes or trailer parks. I think your customers are the types who use interior designers and rarely step foot in big box stores.

Definitely that would work. From my experience far strongest companies are design/build in high end and upper bracket market. I personally do framing/trim and that mean a lot of real heavy duty construction work. I target to work directly for customers, do not like GC between. Evidently some guys made it with trimming but do not think that would most do. If some guy decide that will do trimming for living he is at a very steep path. When I did trim for example for Choice wood company I trimmed always most expensive houses and main rooms of that houses. My trimming is very good and again would not make with only trimming.

Wouldn't you be able to make trim work your sole source of income if you're more than competent at high-end custom trim, market that way, and charge accordingly, while using the middle of the road jobs to fill in the gaps between the real money-makers?
