How To Unsolder A Copper Time Capsule?

Did some work today on prepping a building to be bricked up. It had a small portion of symbolic brick on it along with a cornerstone that was taken down.

Behind it was a little surprise.... a copper box all soldered up.

Any suggestions on opening it without torching the inside?

Cut it.

The torched it closed, so why do you think you can't torch it open?

'They' knew what was in it. I don't have x-ray vision.

"They" used a large soldering iron to put it together.

Pretty sure torching it won't hurt human remains.

Yup, soldering iron for sure. This will not burn the paper inside (if any) where a torch might.

Wow! Really cool find. Are you going to try and find out when the building was built? Maybe you can find out something about it on micro film at the library. An old newspaper article might list what’s inside. Might be worth checking out before you attempt to open it.

Pretty easy to do. My dad and I built it in 1987.

MELTING solder is easy.

Getting molten solder to flow INTO a joint is easy.

Getting molten solder to flow OUT of a joint is....... not so easy.

Or haven't y'all ever soldered copper before?

No truer words actually. You need to add solder to unsolder.

I'd chisel it open.

Yes, I made a 2' x 2' x 2' copper box. I know how to sweat.

Melt a corner. Lift an edge and pull while continuing to melt the lead.

Or cut it.
