How To Get Rid Of Unlicensed Hacks

It should be a law that the HO has to write the contractors lic# and the license plate number on the check or they can not write the money off on there taxes and a $1000 fine. If the state had a license plate number they could track these guys down easier.
Here in MN they have been going after everybody. It's funny when the state needs money they will do it but when it's hurting the little guy the state could care less.
Just a thought and yes I know it's not fool proof.

No matter what you do or try, you will never get rid of unlicensed hacks.

And licensing does not ensure quality work. Some of the greatest hackery is licenced and approved..

Re: How To Get Rid Of Unlicensed Hacks

So if Your state requires a license and mine doesn't ...That makes me a hack? or only if I do work in your state? Then I'm a hack? So a piece of paper makes me a hack?

There's too many threads here about "Hacks". Truth is a piece of paper means nothing. As long as the quality is there and the customer got a good value for their money that is all that should matter.

I agree with Summit, we don't need governmental barriers to entry let quality of work and service prevail.

If you don't need a lic in your state. Then this thread is not for you.

I'd much rather them start to attack cash only deals first. Anything over 250 should somehow have to be in a traceable form.

No.....not a hack necessarily. But when you can out bid any licensed contractor because you don't have to pay what he has to pay then you are not put on any type of pedestal in my eyes.

Yes maybe you do good work but are you reporting to the IRS. Do you have a bond, insurance, etc. It's not just a piece of paper. It's many pieces of paper with time and money needed to acquire such papers.

All hypothetical....not directed at you. Sad that I have to clarify but......

In your state ......sure. In mine.....no. See above.

Once again due to the construing of words that happens over and over around here I am in no way saying that a licensed contractor has never done an injustice to a customer but it is what it is.

Anyone can get a license. Not everyone can be experienced. Let's face it, this business is a perfect place for anyone who wants to start a business with a sawzall and a truck.

BTW I agree with the other guys.......you will never get rid of them. So the best thing to do is do what you feel is right, do the best work you can, be the awesome contractor your customers expect, and worry about yourself.

Absolutely. The barriers to entry is like $50. It only makes sense this would be an ongoing problem.

Re: How To Get Rid Of Unlicensed Hacks

The sun comes out for everybody i always say....
Some contracter or generals wont let you turn in a bid unless it is followed with insurance and worker comp certificates.
But lately i have been getting out bid by non licsenced contracters complete low ballers these stucco guys are covering large amouts of sq ft cheap and may i say quick they are making material spread out longer and spreading it thin. Ive heard fly by nighters" im not happy about it but you get what you pay for.

I will be repairing their flaking walls this spring you will see.

I will say it looks good though very decieving

Sometimes I feel that contractors' licenses are just a way for the government to fill its coffers rather than as a way to ensure better quality contractors.

Re: How To Get Rid Of Unlicensed Hacks

What if there were no license period. You had to work solely on your reputation, word of mouth. If you do poor work people stop calling you. You do great work you stay busy. Soon the guys that do poor work are gone and the others get bigger. If this were to happen would your work habits change? Would you supervise your employees differently? Would you talk to your customers different and go more out of your way to please them? Just my opinion but licensing is nothing more than a cash cow for the state in most cases having a license not guarantee quality work, but it does give credibility to people who have not earned it. If the states were serious someone who rips people off till they get so many lawsuits then go out of business and open up 2 weeks later under another name using the same license would be stopped. If you don't believe this when is the last time you heard of someone's license being pulled.

Re: How To Get Rid Of Unlicensed Hacks

In Michigan you have had to take an exam to qualify for your license.

In the last 4 years they have implemented pre-test classes. These on the cheap end cost about 1200.

It still does not ensure quality, but it helps weed out some of the guys who don'y carry insurance, and pay taxes, and so on.

Even more troublesome is that most states don't revoke doctor's license. Even if a doctor does follow proper procedures and does get his or her license revoked, he or she can go work in another state.

License mean nothing in contracting and in many other professions. However in aviation, they at least recertify pilots every six months.
