How to fire people.
 
So I know Iím being spineless. But I have a guy thatís been working for me for about 10 months. He is probably my most experienced carpenter, Iíll spare the details but heís just not fitting in.

My problem is I like him and I donít have the heart to tell him I donít want him to work for me any longer. I know Iím being weak and if Iím going to run a successful business I need to man up! So ya this sucks...

Fired

Fired with severance

Taper work til he leaves

Work to change him



At 10 months, it is kind of hard to fire him for not fitting in. Those decisions should try to be ironed out by 90 days. But if its not working its not. Youre not going to change him. Time let him go.

The less you say the better. Tell him theres no hard feelings and maybe give him a weeks salary. Maybe offer a reference to help him reposition.

in person, no BS, keep it brief, either first thing in the morning or at the end of the day and have his check ready to give to him.

Just curious if you like the guy how is he not fitting in? 10 months is quite awhile to realize this.

Part of it is me giving people the benefit of the doubt and part of it me being in denial. (Those could be the same thing!)I guess these are weaknesses I need to work on!!!

It's like cough medicine as a kid, you just have to pinch your nose and take your medicine. Once it's over you realize that it wasn't that bad and you will feel better real soon!

You'll be better off in the long run and you'll wish you had done it sooner.

I donít believe there is anything weak or spineless having optimism a guy will work out. Sometimes it just doesnít.
Weak and spineless comes to mind terminating a guy via phone or through a sub management level team member.
Heís a grown man. Give him that much respect and do it face to face, with minimal discussion unless he is curious. Keeps the emotion out of it. It still sucks, cannot take that away from you, but sometimes necessary in the grand scheme.

ďThank you ___________ for your help these last 10 months but I no longer require your services. Feel free to use me as a reference.

If you feel the need to blow smoke up his hind end to validate the termination I can promise you the conversation could easily turn for the worse. Inflating his ego 30 seconds before terminating him will piss him off, as you might imagine. No need to discuss.
A smile and a handshake, a few choice words, 2 checks, itís done.

Just my opinion but its been my MO as far back as I can remember. Nothing glorified about that part of the business, just a necessary byproduct.

I can't agree more. It is absolutely my least favorite part of owning a business. I always tried to do it at the end of a day rather than the beginning. Sometimes, I would even wait til Friday so they could earn a few extra bucks. As an owner, you know it has to be done, but as a human being, it should never be easy.

I've done it on a Monday first thing in the morning. This way you don't let him fester over the weekend. He can get right to looking for a new job that day.

On the other hand, it could ruin your weekend dreading Monday morning.

Have you addressed the "not fitting in" part with him? For example, if he's not being professional for some reason, or testing boundaries, address it calmly and directly.

Is it a trust issue, or is he just an odd duck and you're just tired of listening to the drama? Just curious. We've all been through it.

Or is he stretching the work?

Hiring and firing makes or breaks you.

You aren't doing him any favors keeping him on with no future, you have to give him a chance to find a better long term fit.

You're being a jerk by keeping him.

I witnessed a co- worker get fired by those words as he had just asked for a raise. The money isnít why he was let go.
I learned a lot from that termination over the years, and contemplate how I fire people based on that exchange 20 years ago.
