How Do I Repair A Puncture Hole In Stainless Steel Sink?

Is there a way to repair a puncture hole (the size of the tip of a pencil) in a stainless steel sink without replacing the sink?

yes, but it more than likely won't look very good.

hopefully this is in your own home and not that of a client....

bite the bullet and install a new sink...

You could put a stainless rivet through the hole but then you'd have to put at least three more in, in a pattern that looks like it was intentional.

How much for new sink, labor & mat'ls?
How much for the fix above?

The sink is in my home. The hole is very small. Rivets would only draw attention to it as well as create more holes in the sink.

I was thinking something like in the line of soldering or similar process.

A highly experienced welder with a good portable Tig welder system.

Sinks are not very heavy gauge but it can be done. I have done it many times.

Hammer in the puncture, back with some heavy aluminium or copper ingot, very cool torch. Like I said not and easy thing to do.

Andy.

Just as a preventative lesson for the rest of us, what caused the pin point hole?

Drop-in or under mount? If it's a drop it, replacing it would be the way to got to get it done and get out. In your home? Then you have the luxury of messing around with epoxy first.

Any good sheet metal fabricator should be able to do it as well - they should have done welding for custom SS stuff.

Sounds like there is a good backstory here. Please tell us how the hole got there. Inquiring minds want to know.

Another option, take the sink out, turn it up side down and braze the hole. All you will see then is a tiny bit of brass.

Tig weld it for sure. Stainless is pretty easy to weld. Only problem is you may end up with some rusting around the repair. The heat from the weld can do that to stainless sometimes. Find someone with a portable 110 tig machine that is really good. It should literally be like one dab and done.

If it's just to fill the hole then back the hole up with a pc of metal and bang the hole closed from the other side. The put a dab of silicon on the backside. Put a pc of tape on the front side to prevent the silicon from squeezing through.

Glue a spoon onto the hole...permanently. If you have kids, nobody will notice.

Replace the sink. Use a Hercules Universal Sink Harness.
