How Can House Wrap Serve As Air Seal With 1000 Siding Nails Piercing It?

I am at sheathing stage and am trying to figure out the best way to air seal. Should I;
1) caulk internally everywhere, or -
2) rely on a super tight house wrap plan using tape over all joints, then 15lb felt using cap nails.

Either way, aren't the 10000 siding nails going to create 10000 little entry points for air to enter/escape?

Thanks

If there is a nail in those holes the air can't pass thru.

I thought house wrap was supposed to have holes in it.

House wrap is not an air sealer.

It's a vapor barrier.

Actually I don't believe that is even true...I think most manufacturer's call them weather resistant barriers. A true vapor barrier goes on the warm side of a wall.

A WRB can act as an air & water barrier if installed properly - nails don't matter unless you pull it out leaving a big hole --- vapor retarders / barriers is another can of worms, especially where to place them, what to use, etc...

http://thehtrc.com/category/home-rel...ing-insulation - ton of pieces for you on air sealing, etc...

Correct.

It doesn't block vapor, it allows vapor through it. It blocks water in its liquid form.

Hence WRB.

Do a rain screen wall, the batten strips over the studs will solve that question + it is the much better system to employ.

Not all house wrap keeps out water, anyway.

I think some is just for covering the crappy sheathing job and making it look like progress.

Re: How Can House Wrap Serve As Air Seal With 1000 Siding Nails Piercing It?

If you really want a bomb proof air sealing job with your sheathing you need to double sheathing the roof and walls using a rain screen. That way your air barrier and water resistant barrier on the walls and roof remains untouched and unbothered with roofing and siding replacement over the years.

How air tight do houses really need to be? I think things are getting way out of hand with this pursuit, causing new issues that didn't use to exist, neccesitating new techniques and equipment to resolve them.

What's that new product (not foam) that can be fogged inside the semi-sealed structure and as it escapes out tiny cracks it seals all those tiny little gaps, replacing the time consuming task of caulking everything?

All true. And the trend is going to continue.

Re: How Can House Wrap Serve As Air Seal With 1000 Siding Nails Piercing It?

I think it's hilarious that in an effort to supposedly reduce energy consumption, you now have houses that are 100% dependent on 24 hour, electrically operated, whole-house ventilation systems, so your house doesn't rot from the inside, or suffocate you.

And what happens when the power goes out?

Talk about being dependent on the grid.

And these same super-sealed houses are impossible to build without a vast array of toxic, petroleum-based products, that can only be manufactured by a mega corporation.

And have ZERO recyclability at end of life.

The whole "green building" thing is just another scam. Another method of making corporations rich(er).
