Home Owners With Servants, Everywhere!

Is it just me, or does everyone have servants these days? Unless the HO has just recently given birth, the house is left to a servant. And in most cases, they are reliable, but jeez, it just seems weird.

Clearly things are different in different areas. In 45 years of mostly high-end residential work in our area, the closest thing we've encountered is the weekly cleaning person.

Maybe it is just you.....

None of my customers have servants. Some cleaning people and lawn care folks....and me.

No servants here either. Are you sure they are servants? Are these the live in kind? Do I they wear maids outfits? Did you eat the brown acid? So many questions.

Re: Home Owners With Servants, Everywhere!

No, I get it too. Fortunately these are the people with a couple bucks to spend. (But usually they fight you for each penny )

I work in rich-ville. It makes me want to puke sometimes how easy some people have it.

I was scolded about a year ago for interrupting one of these "princesses'" piano lessons to ask her to approve lighting placement. She told me I should have asked either her nanny (raising her 2 kids), or the housekeeper instead of having the audacity to bother her...who would have been the first one to whine if it wasn't to her satisfaction.

She was genuinely upset about my interruption. I feel sorry for the offspring more than anything. Maybe I shouldn't because they probably will get a bunch of money for doing nothing too eventually...but nothing replaces an attentive and good mom which this one wasn't.

Where the f*** do you work. Windsor castle! I worked in some very nice manors in the UK worth silly millions and never ever ever come across servants. Nanny's, cleaner, cooks, groundskeepers etc etc but no servants.

I have a client who has a 2 million dollar porsche. He mows his own lawn. People with servants need a reality check.

Re: Home Owners With Servants, Everywhere!

"Servant" is a derogatory term that people don't register well with.

But being in Toronto as well, I also see a lot of "Maids", "Housekeepers", or "Live-in Nannies".

Most of the homes I work on have a full time, live in housekeeper.

So NO, you are not alone.

A friend of mine recently sent me an insightful random text: "I wonder when it became acceptable that you could have your nanny push your 2 kids in a stroller while you shoot the **** on your phone with your Starbucks in hand."

IT'S THE MODERN AGE!!! ... and we still have "servants".

Re: Home Owners With Servants, Everywhere!

I have been in one house that had full time help. Se was a cleaning/ go get groceries, ect person. She used to make the meals also, and would make me lunch the few days i was there. The odd part is the house wasn't that big or fancy, maybe 5k sf.
Most people just have the cleaning person once a week or two.
i have a lady that cleans once every 2 weeks, couldn't imagine needing anymore help than that.

Re: Home Owners With Servants, Everywhere!

I have 2 servants, they do the work I don't want to do, mainly all the building of the decks I sell...

How is a "servant" much different than an employee? I made my employees come help me move, paid them the same hourly rate (more than movers make that's for damn sure). Moving decking, or moving a couch, it's roughly the same. I had a girl work for me 2 years ago, she did data entry and other business stuff and 1 day a week she would clean the house.

Re: Home Owners With Servants, Everywhere!

When I hear servant I think of the guy who brings your luggage in from the car. Opens your front door, brings you your menu for what food you gonna have that night, sets the table, shows you too your room and is on call 24/7 for anything and everything etc etc
