Gotta Love Them Wood Butchers!

Above the ceiling in today's kitchen remodel:

And these are out in the middle of the span.......... and two of 'em are in the same joist!!!!

And yes, they are right under the tub.

What's happening in the first picture? Is that a 2x running through the joist?

Re: Gotta Love Them Wood Butchers!

Ran into a mess like this last year, with the added problem of
the joist that was cut had a second story bearing wall directly
above it.
Fortunately, the ceilings were high enough to frame in some lam
beams and new ceiling joist below it to keep everything in place.
A 16" lam, sandwiched between two existing joists hung low enough
to hang my new ceiling joist.

Good luck with that mess!

Can't figure out if this is a generational thing as I've seen 'work' like that on more than a few occasions. My guess is newfangled utilities came into being after the house was built, so just hack your way into it and use it.

Unpermitted work. Cut your trench, cut anything in the way, install, button up.

That 2X4 may have been an attempt to head off the cut joist - an unusual attention to structural considerations.

Re: Gotta Love Them Wood Butchers!

I think back in the day, or not too far back, some places weren't much for building permits. Speaking of which, ever see a govt building inspector working on a house that needed permits pulled, and none were? I have.... The house was also owned by another government employee.....

This is why framing gets inspected after mechanical. What's good is you know its bad, how to fix it and have been hired . Things like this insure our future ...sadly .

I've seen the same thing in new builds. We sided an apartment complex where nearly Every joist under every tub was cut for plumbing.

Re: Gotta Love Them Wood Butchers!

Looks like my house. Plumbing for the washing machine cuts right through the already skimpy 2x6 joist. I laminated 3/4" ply on either side and installed a beam underneath, all in the mechanical room in the basement so ceiling height isn't so important

That's crazy. Inspectors caught it didn't they? HVAC guy cut into one of my tjis and he bought another one and paid for me to install it...well, his check was short that amount....

Nope, they just let it go. We also had walls where the studs were a couple of inches too long and they just put them in at an angle. This in on two story apartments.

Re: Gotta Love Them Wood Butchers!

A journey man carpenter I was working for on the side as an employee asked me one day to drill a 6 inch duct hole in a beam so he wouldnt have to build a bulk head.
I refused to do it.
We ended up building a bulk head. I was 23 at the time he was 40.
same guy asked me to grab and gas pipe while I worked on a electrical panel.
cant fix this kind of stupid.

I guess that's what I sometimes still struggle with...which is why I prefer to play GC. People get paid to do things right. If they are stupid they get hurt and/or have to do it again when someone inspects it--like me.
Integrity and ignorance. If they lack the first and/or have the second, whoever inspects it should rectify the situation--that's their job.

You should have seen the look on the government (taxpayer paid) building inspector's face when I walked in on him working on a job where there was no permit pulled--and one needed to be. Quiet guy...had trouble keeping eye contact.....

Its often government employees that think they are really important people and are above the law.
Just like many police officers. Unless they are on call with lights flashing they are suppose to drive like the rest of us. :laughing
