Goals For 2017

So last year I read the goals page for 2016 but I didn't post any for the year.

Guess what? I didn't achieve any goals.

So my goals for 2017:

Pay off my house.

Develop a long term full time employee able to operate independently of me.

Care for my family.

What I accomplished in 2016:

Good sales.

12k in new equipment that should last five years or more and increase quality of work. Also should reduce downtime. Now have redundancy in all major equipment except for the edger.

Remodeled my bathroom.

Painted my house.

Oldest son has a 3.5 gpa. Youngest son is reading and writing well. Mother is still alive.

Bought wife a new car. Paid cash. No worries about that vehicle for a decade.

Re: Goals For 2017

2016 was weird. I'm mostly a stay at home dad. My first year not working full time since I think 1996, when I was 13. hah

Still managed to pull in a decent amount of dough, but nothing to brag about.

2017 goals are to finally commit to an area. Am I a city boy forever, or a born again country boy? We'll see Q1 of '17.
Additionally, we're trying to kill the remainder of my wife's student loans(~15k) this coming year. Finally free of wicked wicked debt. Christmas bonus+investor payouts will take care of half of it. It's on me to take care of the other half. Got a couple projects lining up which will do it if I get them all. I'm extremely excited about this. We've been together since we were teenagers and living together since I was 20. I've been chipping away at somebody else's student loan debt for my entire adult life. hah I want this nonsense over with!

Other than that, I guess just keep the kid alive or whatever. So far so good there.

Sounds like a good year, all in all...but Q1 of '17 is about to happen, you know. What are you thinking?

As a random tangent that only you might appreciate, I was listening to "Freakonomics Radio" this afternoon. Give that show a listen, and maybe even get one of his books they were talking about; The four hour work week." Intriguing, to say the least.

Re: Goals For 2017

I didn't make many goals last year. I had one of my 3 full time guys quit after Christmas and then my lead guy quit in February it was a huge hit to my business. We survived it and still ended up doing okay. I replaced those two employees and have managed to stay busy all year.

Goals for 2017

- Give my family a small raise
- Set aside all the money needed for taxes, insurance, overhead, etc. every month
- Stop pricing anything based on hourly pay but rather daily pay
- Do less sub contract work and more custom work
- Build a website
- Spend lots of quality family time with my wife and three boys (#3 due in March)
- Be less stressed by being more organized
- Implement QuickBooks
- Set monthly and quarterly profit quotas
- Increase gross profit by 15%

I know it's a lot but I have to set my sights on goals and work my decision making toward those goals

Re: Goals For 2017

2016 was better than '15. I want to keep the momentum going and make '17 better than '16!

As always ...I want to be more efficient . I need to be.

I've been working on getting another business up and running for the last year or so. And after many long nights in the shop...everything is coming together for a promising start up here in the coming weeks

....As burnt out as I seem to be...Im really excited to get the new year started!

Re: Goals For 2017

I'll give example....In early 2016 it wasn't my goal to reside my house....I knew it needed to be done, it just wasn't on the short list for the year....then serendipity struck....a well below wholesale sale on siding at a local supplier...the price couldn't be beat....the house got sided in March I think it was

Re: Goals For 2017

I'm going to wind down this year. In fact I already have!

My father in law once told me, " Mike when you're on your deathbed, I guarantee you won't be saying, "I wish I built just one more deck!"

I agreed, so I'm going to be golfing more!

Pay off credit card debt, buy an extra utility trailer, start saving for retirement. Plus prepare for taxes every quarter instead of waiting for them to pile up every year. I'm not getting any younger, gotta speed up the funds so I can prepare to slow down one day.

Re: Goals For 2017

My goals are to hire some help (maybe part time to start) to help with the labour side of things, to be more efficient with material runs - I find myself running to the store several times for each deck, and to increase profits/more accurately quote.

My projects usually run long which eats up my profit. Gotta start banking that profit instead!

Re: Goals For 2017

Being that I just got the ball rolling on my business in the 4th quarter of 2016, I didn't have a list of goals for 2016 other than get the business started. Being that I am a one man show, and working only part time on my business (full time as an engineer right now) my goals are probably different than the rest here.

-Revenue of $20,000. Probably my biggest goal of 2017 to be honest.
-Impliment QuickBooks
-Set aside the money for taxes on a monthly basis instead of waiting until year end like others have mentioned
-Build and optimize my business Facebook page
-Build and optimize my business website
-Advertise heavily in my local area
-Buy a tool trailer
-Build a professional relationship with a couple local builders I have known for my entire adult life

Eliminate all advertising and just use site for leads. Already have Carl working on it.

All your eggs in one basket? I dont know. I think its important to apend money on advertising. It makes somebody somehwere give a damn whether you succeed or not. I like being a part of angielist and home advisor. They got my back.

I do ok with angies and home advisor. Definitely make money using them but the volume of leads don't compare what I get from site the way it is now.

Newspaper started with just me for Many years and now there are 4 gutter guys in it. Kind of been a disappointment last few years. Was a gold mine for a long time.

I have tons of guys I sub for and WOM leads always roll in so not putting everything in one basket but just want to see what a totally seo juiced up website can do for me.

If it dosnt work out I'll make less money next year no big deal. I live way within my means so not the end of the world to me. Maybe I'll just get rid of the $350 a month newspaper to start. We'll see

Id junk the newspaper and keep the online in a heartbeat. Just use your trucks for a little brand recognition.

Re: Goals For 2017

We just started our buisness in October of 2015. We did 4 additions and some large remodels and some ensuites etc.

Had a really good first year. For next year 2017
-looking to get my father to join in the company full time if we can double our work load
-1 million in sales ( or more if my father joins)
- get better at proposals by explaining more detail
- get better at selling. This year we got about 1-2 jobs per 10 quoted
-find smaller tradesman companys that can get to our smaller jobs faster
- keep training my employee so I can spend more time on the buisness and take the toolbelt off sometimes
- continue with seo and hopefully get to the first page of Google
- try to get away from doing paperwork at night!!

"Develop a long term full time employee able to operate independently of me."

Sorry to be so cynical, but that guy's going to be smart enough to realize "Hey, I can operate independently" and become your competitor. This site is full of those guys, at least they were at one time.
