Folding Ruler

I was putting some stuff away in my basement and I came across a New Folding ruler... I thought I lost it, use them when doing finish work, cabinets install, etc. So I was just curious how many guys still use them. I remember a while back when doing kitchen installs, I used it day in and out and a Stanley Yankee Screwdriver... still have one of them my truck someplace

Re: Folding Ruler

A 6' wooden folding rule was the only measuring tool my first boss wanted anyone to use.

Re: Folding Ruler

Thats what I started out with in 68. A 6 ft lufkin inside read folding rule. When it was well worn it could grow by at least 1/4 inch

I use mine every time I lay tile. Been tiling for a month straight so it's seen plenty of use lately

Just a second while I move my abacus, ink well and quill out of the way to type.....................OK...
Why do you all use this antiquated measuring device? I have one in a drawer that I inherited from my dad's tools but I just do not see when and where it would do me any better than a tape measure. Please explain what I am missing.

Re: Folding Ruler

Folding rule, Yankee Screwdriver, Push drill, slotted screws, Stanley swivel Miter box w/backsaw and sharp long handsaws....

There has been a great deal of very fine carpentry work done with all that old school stuff....

I'm with you, although I still have one in the truck it rarely sees the light of day!

But if it makes Greg feel better I still use the measure twice cut once theory !

Yeah, silly old tools and machines. I wouldn't know why anyone would have a shop full of that stuff.....

Re: Folding Ruler

I had a folding ruler and a lock level with me everyday while digging foundations holes, cutting out for curb and gutter, and spot checking elevations.
We used them well into the 90's when the cost and portability of rotary lasers made the ruler and lock level somewhat obsolete.

I have a Engineer scale version for reading transit.

A regular folding rule is always in my box..

I also have a steel folding rule in my welding bag.

Re: Folding Ruler

When I worked for a remodeling company, just south of here, most of the leads had them.

I don't use one. I can get just as accurate (to the 32nd), with the old and newer stanleys, even on inside dimensions. (without bending the tape)
