Faux Finish. People Like Them?

I've done quite a few, but they were specifically requested.

What about in general, like for a spec home, or a fixer-upper, that you plan on selling?

I know about the extra cost. I'm just wondering about the impression/desirability.

Most of the one's I do are "stone look". One I did in a bar remodel in a restaurant last fall has gotten a ton of complements.

The "faux" anything is out. It's not at all popular any more. Probably a backlash to when they were overdone, like those 90's "Tuscan" homes that had faux everything everywhere. It's all about natural and authentic materials, not fake stuff.

Now, if you're talking about something like a Level 5 ceiling with silver leaf or a gloss lacquer on it, that's another story. Those are upper end decorator finishes that command a premium.

Whether or not faux finishes are in or out, they're personal and not neutral, which makes them risky for specs and flips. Use them in small amounts.

Personally I hate faux finishes. As someone mentioned, they can strategically be used to highlight a niche or wall etc. Be careful it's very easy to overdo it.

Re: Faux Finish. People Like Them?

Most "faux finishes" installed during the housing boom were barely more than a DIYer dabbing with a sponge, sponsored by market craziness. That stuff was awful. It's too bad that it wrecked the name of faux, though. The best faux finishers often offer all sorts of decorative painting services, ranging from luxury finishes to true faux work - a door panel wood-grained to match some existing decor, marble finishes that can deceive nose-to-finish inspection, etc.

That being said, even at its best it's risky in a spec situation.

Re: Faux Finish. People Like Them?

I've never done a faux finish on a spec house or a house I was flipping.

I have, however, done a few accent walls in medium neutral colors. In my opinion, that's the best way to draw attention to an architectural feature or to give a dull room some personality - without offending anyone.

That was kinda what I thought.

Colored and patterned concrete, on the other hand, seems to be universally liked.
