Re: The...End...Is...Near...

I agree Mike, besides that he seems to be the type of person who is driven towards success. I would bet he isn't a complainer but rather a pretty positive person. People like him are unique, even if he didn't have a hit song I would guess he would succeed by leaps and bounds compared to average folks. He seems to have uber enthusiasm and determination, that's always a winner.

not much different then a lot of you.
Think about it, the guy rose to meteoric stardom and survived it, which a lot of others didn't. The guy was so famous he reached that place in celebrity where when you're too famous, you become a joke. Look at some of the people who reached such huge levels of success too early and they all share this if they were big enough. He went from nothing to richer than any of us, to being a joke and to nothing, and like anyone of us had to face the reality of tomorrow I have to wake up and face the world and what am I going to do?

Look at Michael Jackson, a similar case but he ended up dead, for Vanilla Ice to still be alive the guys got to have more going for him then most will give him credit for.

I think if the show avoids the easy road of trying to play off his vanilla ice persona and shows more of Robert Van Winkle, I think there is a good chance a lot of people will see who he really is and see that he's a survivor and pretty smart, and a guy who no matter what he had, he still if faced with the reality of having to make a living and raise his kids, not much different then what a lot of contractors faced and are facing today. And if the guy can swing doing a multi-million dollar flip and it's legitimate, he's got my attention.

Look at Sammy Hagar. Pretty much a musical joke, yet today he's got what's considered one of the premiere tequilas in the world, and rumoured to have made more money off of Cabo Wabo tequilla then he ever did in rock and roll.

It will all come down to the edit of the show. I think Van Winkle has a lot more ability besides his grab for the riches he made trying to be a rap star and everything else he did to try to make the easy money. If he's going to fall back into construction, we all know there won't be any easy days in the field.
The difference is that some of us are set in place to our purpose, a destiny thing. He "slid in" in an illegitimate manner. He will never be the real deal.

I was a big fan of Tesla in the 80's and a couple years ago a friend of mine had to drag me out to watch them in a concert in Milwaukee. I thought it would be really bad but it turned out to be great, they were actually better than in the 80's. It was a really small club but it was wall to wall packed.

Iv'e been to a lot of concerts and that was one of the best so far. It's cool to see how how much energy they put into a show after all this time.

I used to go to shows all the time, but now there isn't a act out there I'd take the time to see. Vannilla Ice not my cup of tea.

After seeing the Floyd I quit going to concerts. Can't imagine anything better or close.

How did he slide in? I doubt he was sitting on the couch eating popcorn watching Fox news waiting for the phone to ring. I'm willing to bet he initiated this whole thing and worked pretty hard to do it.

Being legit in construction might not be easy but it's also not rocket science. Being legit is just a matter of persistence and enthusiasm.

Going to a Floyd concert kinda ruins you for any other concert.

It's tuff to top it.

I think most of those guys got caught up in the fame and fortune, nearly as many were mismanaged and ended up broke. The guys that are still around are the ones who are driven by the music. Something they may have lost track of so many years ago.

Re: The...End...Is...Near...

Do you guys think that because he was famous it made it easier for him to become a contractor? Sure it might have helped to have the capital, but come on it's still hard work. I bet he does mostly flips because who would hire a rap star to remodel? Talk about trying to overcome "inexperience" How does rap tie in with experience pouring concrete? If anything most people have the same perception as many of us "what the heck? how could he know what he is doing?"

If anything I think he has to work harder than any of us.

I watched the shows and thought he did a pretty good job. I am excited to see the rest of the shows, I want to see where he takes the inside.

That's a great point Mike.

I still think it, above all, that this show is bringing his joke to the trades....I'm sure Van Winkle is very, very smart, I respect that.....

I haven't seen the show so my opinion is what it is..........Like you said it comes down to editing, if Van Winkle portrays home building as the profession it is, and not completely dumbing down residential construction, then I'll give him some credit.

He's not a craftsman, he's an entertainer......My gut instinct tells me he's using his celebrity to exploit a hobby/interest.......that hobby happens to be my livelihood and it is insulting.

Paris Hilton recorded a song that got air play, not because she has any inherent talent, but because she knows the right people and can afford to pay for the best problem solvers....I'm sure that didn't sit well with any starving professional musicians..........

I don't think he is bringing a joke to the trades. In fact I think he is making what you and I do "freaking cool" to most people. He is helping save it.

okay, I'll chew on that...........he's tenacious.....as long as he gives credit where credit is due........you don't have to be a craftsman to be a GC

Re: The...End...Is...Near...

Hey I'm just glad we can chat about this without getting pissy. That's what makes a forum fun.

To me, I like it when they show people on tv bashing with sledge hammers. I think that scares a lot of people and it's more fun to watch. He is giving us job security, plus we are now all cool like Vanilla Ice. I might even start wearing a hat with a flat brim and a price tag still on it pulled down past my eyebrows.

Vanilla Ice Plumbing and repair? Kinda has a ring....I'm gonna go reserve that .com ASAP!

I like the ones who have formed an opinion with out watching the show... Don't we fight this kind of prejudgment all the time? "All contractors are con artists" have we heard this before? But then you have to overcome that by proving otherwise. Was it fair that the homeowner made this judgment based upon previous experience?
