Eliminate Useless Unexperienced Employee Applicants

So we are growing, thats a plus! Now comes the time to expand our man power. We currently have two in the office/shop and five in the field. I would like to add three more to make two 4 men crews. We can pound out some work, IF we employee the right people. I've posted in craigslist before, what a joke. We have now posted in local papers and local online searches. They are turning up some good results. So we are doing the hire 25 and fire 20 to weed out the bad. I recently had an applicant say he had framing experience and had worked in the construction field for about 3 to 5 years. This kid couldn't even read a tape. What a waste of my time. Why would you apply for an "experienced framer wanted" position with no skills. I had to let him go. I was thinking about making a questionnaire for applicants to fill out. Something around 15 questions to eliminate the ones that are exaggerating their experience. Ive come up with about 5 questions so far. I need some more. Feel free to chime in.

1) How would you describe a hip block?
2) What is plumb and level?
3) What does 3,4,5 mean to you?
4)What is a jack/cripple?
5) What is a header?

I figure if they can't answer these then their work experience is bogus. What else can I add? I'm blank as a fart.... My crew leader wanted to put in the add "building your parents a deck doesn't consist of experience." I wanted to say "hanging pictures is not framing experience"... Ha.

What are the nominal dimensions of a 2x6?

What is the length of a stud for a 9' wall?

Excluding built up corners & partitions, how many studs are in a wall that is 10' long?

What does the term 5/12 mean?

What is PT lumber used for?

What are batter boards used for?

How would you determine if a 12' tall was is plumb?

What does plumb & line mean?

Explain how you would "line" a wall?

What is a plumb cut on a rafter?

Describe a hip roof?

What is a GFCI?

Given a set of plans, what does the scale 1/4" / ft mean?

What is the purpose of a header?

What is the importance of a shear wall?

What is the best way to alter a roof truss if it is too long?

Do you know what OSHA is?

What is the best way to pin up a guard on a skil saw?

On a wall that is 16" oc what is the distance from the end to the edge of the first stud?

Why is it important to keep a job site neat?

What does the term "rip" mean in cutting lumber?

Why do you think it is important to be at work,on time, every day?

On a stick framed roof what is a collar tie?

What is a TJI/Glulam/LVL?

What is the difference between OSB and plywood?

What does the term blind nail mean?

If you were told to "crown" the joists what would you do?

There's more but you get the idea.....

In my ads I say must wear whites. Don't know how that translates to framing but it weeds out 98% of the guys with zero experience.

What does a carpenter have to have that costs enough to make a bull****ter not apply? I'd put that in my ad for help wanted.

If that is normal for your crew I would put that. can see that easily being several hundred dollars. Nothing to a guy that does it for a living. Alot to a guy trying to fake it.

The scary thing is that I knew all but a couple of these, but I still would not call myself a framer. You need to figure out how to weed me out.
