We all make them ......lord knows I 've made plenty. Its not owning up to them or being willing to make them right that gets me.

And if you have 25 years experience with tile, and know what you are doing, the first thing you do is check something for flat ,level or plumb before you do anything.

Someone please talk me down off this ledge .....
So, did you ask him:

"Why did you do that?"
"What were you thinking"
"can't I trust you to do ANYTHING?"

I did! He said , well, in the future , we are going to just slow down and do it right when you rush us. And I said , dude!! Show me one text , ever, where I said to rush anything . That had never happened . work? Yes, I 've said to work .

One job he messed up, he said , "well, we were just trying to get it done."

He gone.

My OTJT has taught me those questions I listed, and "I 've said to work" are guaranteed performance killers.

Re: Does Anyone Ever Make Mistakes Anymore?

I have made plenty of mistakes of over the years, just ask my wife Have tried to own up to them and fix them. The person that has never made a mistake has never done anything. I have far more respect for someone that admits to messing up then someone that will not. Think it says alot about ones character.

Re: Does Anyone Ever Make Mistakes Anymore?

I make mistakes all the time. And I'll tell you, there are good mistakes and bad mistakes.

A good mistake is cutting a board long, you can cut it again, a bad mistake is cutting a board to short, now you need new material.

Usually mistakes end up making a project a bit fancier because you need to embellish the mistake to hide it.

I was cutting a cabinet to cabinet seat that needed to be scribed to the wall, and the two sides were not parallel. It also had ears on the front end that overlapped the cabinet.

I took all my measurements very carefully and double checked. When I went to put it in place it just dropped in, 1/4" short on either side. Really sucked because this was a prefinished pc, no way to make a new one on site. So we finished up what we could and back at the shop I made 3 pcs of molding to cover the "error in judgement". The client actually liked this addition so the mistake worked out. I still didn't feel right about it.

Can't actually remember why I made the error but I did figure it out how I made the mistake. And as long as I have a logical reason for making the mistake I feel better. It's those mistakes that there is no other reason than stupidity that upset me.

I can't blame anyone because I work alone.

Re: Does Anyone Ever Make Mistakes Anymore?

I've found admitting my mistakes immediately after they happen goes a long way in giving my word credibility. I'm talking mistakes that aren't fixable within the day. If the boss asks me at the end of a project if it's 100% complete and there are no loose ends or anything to fix and I say "it's done" then it really is.

I don't like making mistakes but when they happen admitting them early and fixing them quickly usually mitigates the damage.

I always own up to my mistakes.

However certain people seems to enjoy jumping on you for one mistake that slipped through. That four other guys seems to miss as well.

Re: Does Anyone Ever Make Mistakes Anymore?

I make some layout mistakes ever so often, basically annoying more than an issue.

I think it's trying to get job flow going versus trying to double check everything you do.

As far as floor prep, wow, really substrates need to be near perfect, when does that happen? Tile sizes are showcasing bad floor prep/substrates.

We just did some hardwood, the spots I would have self leveled ended up solid, other areas within specs ended up hollow spots underneath.

Re: Does Anyone Ever Make Mistakes Anymore?

We are finishing a large porch/deck right now and we had to do the huge ceiling in three rows of soffit with dividers in the middle. We got done with one whole half and looked at it and I knew it wasn't right. Somehow the three sections didn't line up perfectly straight. My brother said no one would even notice. I took him aside and said that we don't do things like that. I know it isn't right, dad knows it isn't right and it's not acceptable. Three hours later we had it all tore out and fixed our mistakes and had it reinstalled and looking great. Hopefully my brother learned a valuable lesson that day.

Re: Does Anyone Ever Make Mistakes Anymore?

On tile , especially 6x36 rectified plank, we want it flat before we set anything . we never find it that way, but we charge, plan and schedule for prep. We never just go in and set tile and see what happens ..that's suicide .

I have said this before in previous threads.Maybe, just maybe the thirty years experience your carpenter claims is really one year of experience replicated thirty times.
