Custom Glass In In Old China Cabinet

60-70 year old china cabinet from wife's grandmother
don`t know what its called,
the door and fixed panels have a wavy typed glass.
each one has the same pattern , where the glass bellys in,
so looking at the door when its vertical , it goes in , and back out
like if you layed it down , i would be like 3 shallow bowls ( but not that dramatic)
don`t know if i`m explaining it , doesn`t even show well in a picture
its just scoops in 3 even times slightly.

don`t even know who to go to , so i can replace it .

any advice would help ( to save my life )

yes!... i`m the one who broke it !!
took this whole termite eaten piece of furniture apart , and worked on it when i could for 4 weeks
just finished it , and stood the door up outside while i painted it , and let it dry, and the wind blew it over .
wife is livid , for how long it took , and then walking in after work , and seeing it .( she had plans to finally load it up with her stuff , and finally have the dining room back in order)

throw me a life-line !

Find a stained glass artist in your area. They may have some salvaged glass.

Re: Custom Glass In In Old China Cabinet

Do you have any glass blowers in your area? I would try them first.

If not, how about people who work with stained glass. they could probably point you in the right direction to find someone who could help.

Re: Custom Glass In In Old China Cabinet

Throwing out another idea...could you possibly move the other pieces of glass around to leave the center pane as the one for the new glass, and use a piece of stained glass in that center pane?

I would check out some furniture restoration companies.

They may have some contacts with people who make a living collecting and selling things like that.

Sounds like hand poured glass which was the norm turn of the century. Find a turn of the century house window & you'll find the wavy glass you're looking for. Shame you aren't closer, I'd fix ya up. We've got lots of salvaged antique glass in warehouse. Back when we done furniture restorations, I had to have it for the exact purpose you're needing to solve.

actually going to do that .( no choice)
gonna buy a piece of stock glass , and install it in that middle door

the front has 3 identical doors.
but the left and right one are fixed ( i guess someone fixed them)

so , now i`ll have a smooth one in the middle , and the obscure ones on either side.

i actually don`t like the look of this glass . , when looking through the glass , everything looks distorted, almost looks like a mistake , , but it is antique , so i wanted to leave it as is.

my wife loves this piece. has sentimental value for her.
i don`t like it at all.grumbled about having it in our dining room
so now when this ( breaking the glass on the last hour )happened , she was livid , figuring i just don`t care
not a happy saturday .
i can`t` blame her.

Re: Custom Glass In In Old China Cabinet

If you just want "ugly" (my opinion) old time wavy distorted glass, I am sure that a stained glass place, either locally or online, could get that for you.

Good luck!

We have different views of ugly. Putting modern glass in an antique family heirloom is ugly IMO.

Re: Custom Glass In In Old China Cabinet

Don't put in stock glass. It will look awful.

At a minimum, go to a glass shop and look at samples. Lots of glass styles for the middle pane.

Also, most shops will have salvage glass.

Try and get us a picture of how it reflects. Not sure what you are describing in the original glass.

This should be good for a few hundred, unless you get lucky.

They are a huge supplier of decorative glass

wavy glass is not hard to find, any decent glass shop should be able to get it easily

If an exact match cannot be found, swap them all out with something close, this is not Colonial Williamsburg. At least everything will match.
