Contractor Talk Downtime - It Was A Bad Day!

Yup, today officially sucked. I was woken up early in the morning by my server guy who just said "We got major problems". Never a good way to start the day.

Someone got into our domain name account and basically stole a few key domain names. They moved them out of our account and into their own account and then changed the nameservers that point traffic to a specific server. Long story short, we had to deal with the legal department all day at the domain registrar and prove we where who we said we were and finally got control of the domains around 4:00 CST.

We updated the nameservers back to our server and it's going to take a few hours to populate but if your seeing this now you should be set.

A couple of quick notes. They took over the domain but didn't access the server so the data is safe and there is nothing to worry about there.

Last, we have set up a system with the domain registrar to make sure this never happens again. I can't get into details for security reasons but it's pretty fool proof.

I'm sorry for the outage. Hopefully your day was better than mine

Thanks

Sorry it was a rough day.
I wouldn't have known myself.
I checked in off and on through
the day, and nary a problem.

I didn't have access to CT all day!!! My day sucked of course. I think yours took the cake, but seems all settled now.

Glad it worked out.

Re: Contractor Talk Downtime - It Was A Bad Day!

Kind of complex I know. Domain names point to a nameserver which in turn points to a server. The server actually uses an IP address as an access point rather than the domain name so the web relies on nameservers to convert domain names into useable IP addresses which then route the traffic to the right server like a phone number would.

This hacker broke into the account and then moved the domain name out of our account and into their own. They then change the nameservers so it pointed to a different server. To get the domain name back we had to prove we owned it and get it removed from their account and put back into our own. We then pointed to the right nameserver.

WAY more info than you needed I know. Short answer... it's fixed now

I got this login page early this morning but it wasn't CT, it looked like the host server's login.

Re: Contractor Talk Downtime - It Was A Bad Day!

So did you find out who did this......? I swear~ AP said it exactly the way I would have phrased it .. I just hope you find out who is responsible and justice gets severed. On a humorous side.... it's kind of funny when you think about it~ the "hacks" want to get in ~ so bad..."hacks"

That was the first thing I thought when I drew blanks this morning. I was afraid Nathan went the way of some of my subcontractors lately
