Yeah, no way I would take on something as large as a whole kitchen redo without ever having done a single door.

A newer contractor, I like to expand my knowledge and skillset as opportunities afford. This one is low risk. If nothing else I’ll make a couple hundred bucks.

MDF doors are very inexpensive... I'd order one to match and paint it along with the others and then try to upsell the whole kitchen when they see the difference and convert the few hundred to a few thousand...

Knew a guy who ONLY did painted kitchens... was not interested in the rest of the solutions and ended up specializing in it and worked out of his basement... did one a week, and NET'd over $100K/year... and he usually was just repainting the existing...

Re: Cabinet Door Refinishing

Where might I order cabinet doors from?

Most of my work is exterior repair, most of which comes from homebuyers requests or appraisers requirement for mortgage financing. Siding, trim, roofing, vapor barriers, etc. Some handyman type repairs with a deck or fence every once in a while.

I just learned about run to match doors this year. Hard to get financing sometimes with a pet door in the middle of the garage/dwelling entry door.

Walzcraft is probably the largest online.

I used to get some from Meridian Productsbut they make too many mistakes and their customer service is horrible now. I have ordered from Walzcraft before with good results and they will be getting a large order from me in a month or so

Look at Westwinds catalog, if they have the style you need let me know the size. I get a pretty good discount from them.

We make our own and buy (for two different reasons)... suppliers who have been consistently excellent on quality and price...
www.eliaswoodwork.com/
www.conestogawood.com
www.walzcraft.com
The last two, unless you do any sort of volume, you have to go through their distributors (pricing not THAT much different), but the first you can deal direct...

But you can get MDF doors from pretty much anywhere... all that's needed is a CNC and some MDF so not a big barrier to produce them, hence the large amount of companies that do them... mention the above companies and they probably want to compete price-wise...

But remember, you can get the doors already painted OR with RTF (thermofoil), probably for less than what it would cost you to procuce them. which might be a better upsell for you since this would be the third time they are dealing with it... less maintenance going forward...

Let us know how it works out...

Re: Cabinet Door Refinishing

Does anyone else think Shaker style doors (non-profiled panels) are the latest trend?

Unfortunately, Shakers with pigmented finish is all the rage.....I think they lack character.

Re: Cabinet Door Refinishing

A door frame and panel can be made thinner and with less material when the panel doesn't require a deep profile. It's a more "sustainable" use of materials than raised panel.

It's been a trend here for several years.
