I (calmly) told him I was working. It was at about 1 PM. He told me he had just woken up. At this point I begin getting a bit pissed off.

However, the difference between he and I ... is the fact that i'll find a way to make $xx,***x next week to pay some more bills. He'll be waking up at noon with a hangover.

I understand that difference now. And I realize that everything i do is voluntary - nobody forces me to do what I do, or live how I do. I realize that just because someone does not see things the same way I do - doesn't make them "bad" ... it just makes them different. I also have learned that I can't go around in life alienating myself or others simply because there's something I don't agree with them about --- or else I will wind up certainly alone in life.

So I guess that's how I've changed since that thread. My core feelings about unemployment haven't changed --- but I suppose I am a bit more accepting of the fact that other people simply will see things differently. I'm fine with that. But it still isn't a topic that I'd bring up around me without getting some or some

Man I love you!
Well I love what you wrote.

Last weekend My wife and I went camping out of our kayaks with another couple. We get along great with these two but there are alot of differences between us and them. Not a problem always roll with them. It's not easy finding couples that like to white water, we are glad we have them.

But like your friend this guy is on unemployment right now and has been all winter. The subject comes up during cocktail hour at camp and he proceeds to tell me that the next job may want to work him 6 / 10s. From nothing to 60 hrs a week.

That seems like great news to me. But he is saying how he might turn it down. Doesn't want to be tied to a job for that long. He could collect unemployment till Feb bla bla bla.

Here I am out in the one element that sooths me. Fire pit, trees, river, booze, friends. And I wanna lay into this guy with passion.
I just told him he should understand who he is talking to. My wife and I are both self employed and pray that the universe will continue to present us with the opportunity to work. There is no government hand out for us when the work stops.

Then I changed the subject.

Like the last half of your post I want the friendship more than I want to prove a point. I love these people but wow what core difference!

Re: Best "You're Fired" Story

yep, i agree 100% Gus - 110% - I know exactly how you feel ... sometimes you have to put it like that to your friends - because they won't understand where you're coming from at all.

And like you say, it's that "core" difference in attitude and outlook.

As for the guys that maybe went on it once or twice - as a last resort or just didn't know what else to do ... I can excuse that, and shouldn't deem that as laziness.

It's the guys like my friend --- and like your friend Gus --- who get "picky" once they are on unemployment ... that's I guess what really gets me.

Me? I don't need it. Never will.

Hell, give me a mop at the local Home Depot. Then give me another 6 months and I'll be store manager. If I like it, give me another year and I'll become a regional manager. I'll do it out of spite too - for no other reason than the fact that I like to "climb ladders".

welp, i gotta go figure out how to make some money --- or else I will be mopping floors at Home Depot.

The part I left out was when he was telling me how he has been busting his ass for so long that it is time to relax a little bit. That is when I thought I was gonna lose it.

Hell the guy is almost ten years younger than I am.

I don't want to tell you about another friend that is on "disability".

Cracker please

We're still talking about controlling emotions correct? I'm just pointing out you seem to be telling him that he can't control his emotions and I'm saying none of us can control our emotions 100% of the time. I don't condone what heritage did, nor do I condone what Gus' buddy is doing or your buddy.

This is one of those key differences between those of us who want to do our own thing; and those who want to just show up and get paid (usually with as little effort as possible.)

I often meet people who tell me how they wish they could do what I do. Every time, I encourage them to go for it.

Strangely () they never do*. So many people are risk-averse, it's astounding.

*Well, on second thought, almost never. I have helped a number of others get their business started up.

Re: Best "You're Fired" Story

The only job I got fired from was working with my step dad in 1975, we were building a turkey barn in ND, just happened that the HO was celebrating 50th wedding anniversery and invited us to the party. I was 16 or 17, met the farmers grand daughter at the celebration she grabbed some bottles and we went off to watch heat lightening. I got about an hours sleep that night and had to nail steel on the side walls next morning..........I made one trip around the building with one row of nails by noon..........actually think I was making too much noise for him cause he made it to the hotel about the same time I did and not in any better shape but I got canned. I was rehired two days later.

I have fired two guys, both for not showing up on time, leaving early, or not showing at all. They were both good workers when they were at work. I just told them I can't operate like that and said good-bye and good luck.

Yep and after she plays with the dog, I tie it around my penis once a week for sex

Re: Best "You're Fired" Story

A long long time ago when I first came to Canada from the U.K.

I had this awful job at a water bed factory, I did a crap job and was a bit of a slacker.

The boss came up to me and said "Dave, we are going to have to let you go" I'd never heard of the saying 'let you go' as it's not something said in U.K.

So I said " where to"?

He said, "no, we're letting you go"

I said, "oh, where? Where to"

this went back and forth a couple of times until he blurted out "Your fired"

Oh.... I see

Re: Best "You're Fired" Story

Was working for a cabinet company. I did the doors, drawer fronts and all panels. Make parts, assemble, size, edge, sand.

Rumor had it a layoff was coming. I was friends with the boss and asked him about it. Nope, no layoff.

So a week later on Friday the whole place got laid off. Found out they had a thing they did every couple years, fire everyone, rename the company, hire everyone back at square 1 with no accumulated bennies or vacation time. Scum.

So being laid off I started up a job making a kitchen for a couple that lived 10 miles from me. About 1/2 way through the build the company called me back. Told them I was busy but I'd work a 1/2 day for them until I was finished with the kitchen. They said OK. So I worked 1/2 days for a week. At the end of the week they brought me into the office and said this wasn't working for them. They told me I'd have to work full time or I could leave. I said OK.

So the boss said see you on Monday. I asked why would you see me on Monday, I have to finish up my kitchen. Jaws dropped. I don't take ultimatums to well.

And then they had the gall to tell me I was putting them in a spot. I said really?!, I'm putting you in a spot? And you laying me off with no notice even though I asked wasn't putting me in a spot? Told them to bite me and I walked off.

Found out later that they had to hire 2 guys to take care of what I did by myself.

Re: Best "You're Fired" Story

When I quit working for a bank I just walked into my bosses office and told him I quit effective immediately.

He looked at me and said you know your supposed to give 2 weeks notice.

I looked at him and said if you were going to fire me would you be giving me 2 weeks notice that I'm going to be fired?

As he stood there speechless I walked out.
