I registered on their website but am not a member. There was an interesting bit on the news tonight, about how the rating system is stacked in favor of the companies that pay the fee.
I don't plan on joining.
I think that the fee is about $400 and up to join.

Joining the BBB gives your webpage a solid backlink that Google seems to really like. Other than that, pppth -- that's a lot of $$$ to pay for a backlink!

Yeah I believe it depends on the size of your company. For me it's not worth it. Although a guy I know who owns a local exterior company and has 25 sales people that see 2-3 people a DAY! I think he can afford it. He's been a member since 1995.

I've heard some horror stories though. One about a person filing complaint that never talked to company in first place resolve so called issue. Was a nightmare because it becomes he said, she said.

Doesn't matter what we think. Matters what homeowners think. They believe in it.

If me paying a few hundred dollars results in 30k worth of work a year, I would be inclined to say that it is a good advertising investment.

Sure, sounds good. Can you back it up though? Is this true for your business?

Re: BBB Do It Or Screw It.

I say screw it. Like the news read the other night, they are only in it for the money. Everytime I run an ad in the paper, they call and say that someone gave me a good ref and they think I can do better w/business if I sign up with them. I personally dont think that the majority of customers
looking for good contractors are looking for the seal of the BBB. Get on Angies list through a customer and you would be much better off and it wont cost you a dime.

Re: BBB Do It Or Screw It.

I was talking with a GC the other day and he told me a great story. Said he had a potential customer who was deciding between him and another builder. Customer said the other guy was a BBB member and he was not. GC asked if the customer would hire him if he was a member, Customer says yes, GC calls up the BBB right then and there and asks if they take credit cards over the phone.
BBB is a money making scam, BUT, some customers weigh heavily upon the rating/membership...

I can tell you this, I have lost jobs where the was no difference in price or materials, only the BBB logo. That is why it has me re-thinking my thoughts on it. Also, from researching, you seem to get discounts from them for advertising on various platforms if you include the BBB on it. For example billboards or commercials.

Re: BBB Do It Or Screw It.

don't put money in other people pocket, all these companies all claim to make you a better company if you pay a fee. and so many guys i know are on these ridiculous sites and have the "SITE APPROVED" on their website or card to fool the client, but in the end you have to add that stupid fee to your contracts which makes you loose the contract

Re: BBB Do It Or Screw It.

Its good you bring that up 20-20 did a story on the BBB shakedown, I had recieved the same offer I had a lady from the BBB contact me a few months ago saying they will assure my company a A plus rating if I become a member.
So What do I think about them, I think the BBB is no different from any gangster i ever met. The Difference is they lock up those guys. The Goverment wont mess with a Corporate company like the BBB. They just let um roll on with the Dirty crap they are doing.
So scammer scumbag can buy the same rating as the guys that spends 30 years in business and is honest.

I have found that most small service companies are not members unless somebody has filed a complaint at some point.

BBB is an authoritative consumer protection brand and gives contractors who are members a certain level of trust and reliability in the eyes of the consumer.
