Anyone Cutdown A Metal Exterior Door?

Doing an estimate on moving the location of a front entry door and installing a new one. They currently have a wood door that’s cut down, this is an old bunglow type house and does not have a full size door. Has anyone cut down a prehung metal exterior door? I have cut down a prehung metal interior fire door once but If I remember correctly I just removed the sweep and didn’t reinstall it. Is the sweep able to be reinstalled?

Re: Anyone Cutdown A Metal Exterior Door?

I have had to cut them down a number of times to use them on the cold room door in a basement.

Cutting the door is no problem, just used a demo blade in a skilsaw. Either put the original sweep back on or buy an aftermarket one.

I always hate cutting down the jamb. Takes more time and effort than the door.

Just like working with coil stock. Score the metal skin with a utility knife (multiple passes), bend and break it off. Then cut the wood core with your circular saw. No big deal after you've done it once or twice.

They make a new rubber seal for the bottom. It slips over the bottom of the door. Easiest way to go

How much of a cut?

I usually will find a way to put in a stock size, unless the opening is masonry. Then I would have it cut down on order.

If the company cuts it down they usually just put a slip on sweep on the bottom of the door.

Re: Anyone Cutdown A Metal Exterior Door?

i`d stay on the outside of that knife-score line ,just a tad .
and then polish it with my grinder last.or even a belt sander with an 80 grit belt .
goggle , and gloves a must on this one.

stay away from a glass door too!!

lol . years , YEARS BACK , i did this in a high rise .

without thinking i did it too close to the sliding doors .
the sparks were hitting the glass . i just didn't think about it till i was done . the glass doors looked like they were sprinkled with pepper. it was hundreds of little burn marks.
and the glass was blue....yes the whole building has blue glass sliding glass doors.......
lets just say some of the good old days weren't good..

Re: Anyone Cutdown A Metal Exterior Door?

Have your supplier price out a custom sized door. The cost difference will probably be about the labor charge for cutting the door and jamb down

For short doors I have just used fiberglass one and have them cut. Really not much more money. They can be cut shorter and narrow if need be.

If you are talking about a commercial steel door and frame, yes I've cut many down in height. They are heavy enough material that you can reinstall the end cap and weld or rivet it back in place. Would not try this with most residential grade metal doors as they are not nearly as heavy, I'd just buy a custom size door.
