Any tricks to shortening a split rail fence?

Any tricks to shortening the length of a split rail and keeping the original look. I was thinking of using sawzall with long rough wood bit.

This style rail:

Thats not going to work when you want the fence to end at a certain surveyed point.

Chainsaw & hatchet would be the 2 tools I'd reach for. Don't understand the trick to shortening the rails.

trick to shortening a split rail fence.

#1 move post holes closer together. (don't "move" the hole. dig a new hole and fill in the old one.:):jester:)
#2 cut off rails taper the ends with an adz or draw knife and install into post in new hole before you set the post and backfill.

To shorten the length:

1.) Cut the rail to length

2.) Take the cut end piece and use it to mark the "wedge" on the shortened rail.

3.) Take a wide blade chisel and scribe all along the top and bottom of the outline. Then take and start the split from the end with the chisel. The pieces should split along the scribe line.

You will have a rough hewn wedge that looks like the original.

Best trick of all is: cut your rail before you set the post.
