Any body else taking some time off this Holiday season?

Except for my recent Winter of unemployment I usually end up working through the Holidays. Last go around of self employment it was work up until the 23rd and hope to get a draw for Christmas.

This year has been a bit odd. I have been working like crazy until the last 3 weeks or so when my remodel slowed and was put on hold until next month. This meant that I had a month or so of slack time. I do service work, so I still have a little work to keep me from going bonkers, or getting lazy. I still am working the remodel, but only a few days a week, just to keep from losing touch.

We did put a bit of money aside and that plus incoming invoices keep the wolves off, so I am really enjoying a bit of down time. I used to work for a group of contractors that all took the winter off. It was just SOP. Anybody else try and do this?

Mike- 12-20-2011 02:18 PM

This Friday I clear the last 35 % of this completed Reno. So excited to finish. Then new years in cancun with the misses for a week.

Not to
Mention my glm80 and gta3800 Bosch tools are in today.

Chris Johnson 12-20-2011 02:24 PM

I was trying to shut down tomorrow...not now, had a guy call last week...hole is dug...why anybody would dig without a foundation contractor signed up is beyond me...anyways gave him the Christmas price...we start this Thursday on footings and walls next week

I'm booked for Mexico new years eve...guess we need to push this one

ill make sure we get it done ;)

Brutus 12-20-2011 03:41 PM

I was going to work Friday.... but that was going to be alone, so I asked the bossman if I could take it off, he said sure.

Monday and Tuesday I may be working. Monday I think I am going to hang some board with woodworkbykirk. And Tuesday doing a re-roof with a coworker of mine. He's doing it as his mothers Christmas gift.

Tylerb 12-20-2011 04:21 PM

Were working till Friday and then taking a week off. No signs of any layoffs this winter though.

Leo G 12-20-2011 04:21 PM

I'm gonna give myself Christmas afternoon off.:w00t:

Nothing special, just Christmas day and maybe Monday.

Inner10 12-20-2011 04:52 PM

I'm taking the weekend of but traditionally I get some emergency service calls.

Snobnd 12-20-2011 05:20 PM

I always save the last 2 weeks out of the year for me and my family

Oconomowoc 12-20-2011 05:27 PM

Historically December and January are very slow for service work. Frozen pipes is the big one but that's only once in a while. I'm gonna hang out and do nothing except play in the garage.

BamBamm5144 12-20-2011 05:59 PM

I will be done on Friday and no work again until March most likely.

In the meantime, I will be doing the local home show come February and some miscellaneous stuff.

At least my goal is to NOT work.

Not since I've been with the company. We do travel lots, some of our guys just finished a house in parsborro. I dont think the boss bids much in the HRM cause of the extra travel costs. City outfits would probably beat him out too often to be worth his time. You guys stay primarily in the HRM or do much travel?

TNTRenovate 12-20-2011 06:33 PM

I will be off Saturday and Sunday. I have work, so I am working. Never know when the faucet will be shut off, so I take all I can get.

Thank God Christmas in on a weekend this year, makes my life easy with the Mrs.

J L 12-20-2011 07:19 PM

We're balls to the wall until Friday. Then we're taking a week off as we always do. Back at it in 2012.

We never travel out of HRM. Did one up in Enfield this time last year, and we are currently working on one in Tantallon. Both still technically in HRM. Usually just Dartmouth and Bedford. There's something like 25 years or more of new home construction up in the new area of Bedford.

woodworkbykirk 12-20-2011 07:39 PM

yah.. brutus is in new construction so he has to travel to teh dark side and bedford... im in reno's and my gc hates travel time... one reno we have on the go is literally 4 streets over. the other 8 minutes including the tims drive through

TxElectrician 12-20-2011 07:44 PM

Working thru Friday, then off untill next year.

thomasjmarino 12-20-2011 07:48 PM

Not this year!
With Christmas and New Years on the weekends, it's right back to work come Monday!!

Cole82 12-20-2011 08:52 PM

Just taking the normal Saturday Sunday off may come in at 9:00am Monday instead of 7:00am. I'm just too booked to take time off. Hell I worked this past Sunday to try and catch up a little.

katoman 12-20-2011 08:58 PM

I'm running a week behind on schedule. So we'll take friday and monday off, that's it.

Seriously, I need about 2 weeks off just to wind down and recharge. Maybe in February. I hope.

Best wishes to all. Even the wankers

WildWill 12-20-2011 09:00 PM

I like to take off between Christmas and new years and just call it vacation for the year.

DaVinciRemodel 12-20-2011 09:30 PM

We have traditionally taken Thanksgiving till New Yearís off (11 years in a row) - just one of the perks. This will be the second year in a row now that we will not get that luxury.

Weíll take the week between Christmas and New Years and thatís it. When youíre having a record year Ė itís hard to say no! I also have a wedding to pay for in the spring

BradingCon 12-20-2011 11:51 PM

I am doing a remodel where the homeowner is not living in the home at the moment. I cleared it with my wife and I will work christmas eve til noon and take Christmas Day off. The wife gave me a look but she let it slide:thumbup:

This is why I am glad to have a bit of time. Like most around here, I've been going non-stop since summer with very few days off and even fewer complete days off. I used to do it no problem, but with the mid 40's slowly creeping up, I don't recharge as quick as I used to. That and a pulled rotator cuff and twisted elbow happening a few weeks ago, it comes at a fortuitous time. I have found that I don't heal as fast either. Of course, I've also found it takes more beer to get me drunk, so I suppose it's an ok trade off.

I am heading in tomorrow to build a bathroom vent chase and some other piddly things. Need to be ready to finish up at the first of the year. Next week will be balls to the wall again. Probably take the 26th. off though.

Stephen H 12-21-2011 07:33 AM

I have been off for several weeks now.

Other than a few piddly service calls we won't resume work untill well into march and we really won't seriously start back up untill 1st or 2nd week of april

I spend a lot of time in the winter running, swimming, lifting weights etc. Weather hasn't froze up here yet so I am still running outside.( dog(s) and I are doing 35-40 miles /week

After the 1st of the year I spend an hour or so a day on tax stuff untill that's done and I also spend an hour or so a day sorting out equipment, repairing equipment,researching/ordering new equipment, care and feeding of my mailing list etc., planning retirement investments for the new year etc. also planning to set up a new LLC this winter for family real estate investments.

Been willingly taking 3-4 months off a year like this for 25 years or so. we also virtually shut down for nearly a month in the middle of the summer for vacation, personal household projects etc.

Flying out at 9:30 this morning to NC. Visit with folks & family for a week. The day after I get back it's a glass backsplash til New Year's eve.

Somebody's going to take over the duties of derailing threads for a week for me.

pinwheel 12-21-2011 08:15 AM

We'll take Christmas Day off. Plan to work at least half day Christmas eve. Phone's been blowing up lately, so very little down time coming in the foreseeable future.

Jaws 12-21-2011 11:34 AM

We always just take Xmas Eve and Xmas off. This year we have only remodels and additions going at Xmas, so they don't want us around. Taking off Thursday at noon and going truck shopping. Be back at it Monday.

blackbear 12-21-2011 03:13 PM

took all of Dec. off to hang with the Mrs and new baby. come Jan 2 its 12hr days 6 days a week til I catch up.

MAYBE a plain Jane f150 crew cab with the big bed. No frills. Tax guy said this is the last year accelerated depreciation on vehicles and we need some write offs. Keeping the 3/4 ton though, and IF I buy we will pay the old mans 09 off first. Don't like payments.

annstar 12-22-2011 08:31 AM

Straight back into work on the 3rd of Jan - definitely not complaining!

THINKPAINTING 12-22-2011 09:28 AM

Very slow here this time of year unless your doing new construction or commercial but that market is deader than well you know.. 2013 will be a challenge for sure depending on where you do business. There's more painters here looking for work than carters got liver pills.

If you have more work consider yourself very lucky I've seen my share of very good long time contractors lose everything these last couple of years.

At 55 yrs old my body needs a break gets harder every year I hear sunny Ft Myers calling my name.

Tylerb 12-23-2011 09:25 AM

Poured and floated a 12x20 garage slab, got it all covered and insulated.

A nice short friday, and now a week off, it must be 5 oclock somewhere!:drink:

Leo G 12-23-2011 09:06 PM

Apparently I will be working for a short time tomorrow. I didn't have the proper tool to do one small part of the job and the client is having a party Sat evening. He said it was OK not to have it there but I want it up. 3/4 hour drive each way and less than an hours worth of work ...grrrrr

Sweet. I took Monday and today off. I definitely can't take tomorrow off. Sometimes the hardest thing about being self employed is getting the boss outta the house on a cold and nasty day. That lazy bastid don't wanna do nuthin'.

Big Shoe 12-28-2011 05:50 AM

Had 3 days off in the last 60. Even worked Thanksgiving 6hrs

Hooking up the trailer and heading out Thursday :clap: Comming back home Monday

Annual New Years camping trip! :drink::drink::sleeping:

catfish/carpent 12-28-2011 08:10 AM

well i guess i am, i got a drunk for a partner and he tried to take a swing at me yesterday, so i put him in the dirt, damnit now im looking around again , i hate this, never fails

Leo G 12-28-2011 08:41 AM

But I am trying to keep this weeks day on the short side. You know, short, 8-9 hours, short.

atrawlings 12-28-2011 08:42 AM

No one looks back on their life and wishes they worked more during the holidays. Take some time off fellas and enjoy your family and friends ;)

Chasing Dreams 12-30-2011 01:06 AM

Every year I close up the before Christmas and re-open after New Years:thumbup:

greg24k 12-30-2011 06:59 AM

I usually take 2 months off, Dec/January, but this year I was swamped with work, so it will be a week here and there, but getting a few nice jobs lined up comes Spring time, so it looks like it will be a nice New Year start.

woodchuck2 12-30-2011 09:14 AM

I always take Christmas off unless it is snowing and then i am out plowing but that is rare. Taking time off is one of the reasons why i became self employed. For most of my life i spent holidays working for companies that did not care about whether workers were home with families or not. You either had to kiss A55 for the day off or it was bid by seniority. Family always helped out by scheduling their day around mine so i could at least have dinner with them but that always made me feel like a smuck, who really wants to be the center of attention on a holiday? Being self employed i no longer worry, i just take the day off.

I've been going home at 430 or 5 for about 2 weeks. My wife asked if I was going to part time...
