SSL Certificate

How many guys have this on their site....thus https://yourawesomesite.c o m? I'm hosted on BlueHost and they are giving a free SSL and what appears to be a very simple edit for htaccess to handle the redirect.

Is it really beneficial for a service based business, that does not sell products online?

Re: SSL Certificate

Yes.
Bluehost's "free" is for people using the shared IP (not dedicated) parked or subdomains with WP only. All else is paid SSL. Must have or purchase dedicated IP, Purchase SSL. WP site is probably a quick addon and away you go. Most non WP sites will require extensive modification at the link levels to account for the HTTPS html link requirement for SSL.

Re: SSL Certificate

I'm running a "managed Wordpress" site, really just means that I can get more direct Wordpress help if I ever need it, but mostly I did it for the dedicated IP that comes with it. I was getting thrown onto to many blacklists with the shared IP.

My host offered it and it was simple to convert. Just press a button and it was done.

Re: SSL Certificate

Yes, it is beneficial for two reasons, Cosmetics and Rankings.

Regarding Cosmetics: In Chrome, sites lacking SSL are now marked with the warning “Not Secure” in eye-catching red, right inside the URL bar. Google started doing this back in January 2017 for pages that asked for sensitive information, like credit cards. Then in late 2017 expanded the warning to all websites that have a form, even if it's just one field that asks for something like an email address. In all reality most contractor websites don't really ask for much that would require a true security mechanism in place, but prospects may be mistakenly nervous.

Regarding Rankings: What’s more, Google has stated that SSL is a ranking signal in Google’s search algorithm. This means that a website with SSL enabled may outrank another site without SSL. But keep in mind the word "may" since I doubt this has a major advantage other than when two sites are identically equal which is rare in our industry in the first place.

The cost is usually so small, or Free, that it is worth to just take care of it.
