If you've got the "Google Algorithm"... send it over to me... I'll pay you LOTS of money... LOL

Kidding... I hear ya! You're right... but the "theory" of things is often different than the "reality". Everything depends on the industry, market and competition... among several hundred other factors.

As much as I HATE to admit it... SEO is as much "feel" as it is "research, testing and science". Different factors play out differently in different situations...

We have about 100 sites that we "experiment" with every month... making a single change to see what the result will be.

Recently we have taken a BRAND NEW site and put 3,000, of what many would consider "God Awful" links on it, to see what the effect would be. We have a network of people who are doing the exact same thing to test this out... the idea is to always find out... the Google "theory vs reality".

Remember, Google is in the business of making sure that searchers get the best, most relevant search results... so they don't want us to "crack the code" and manipulate their machine! So... don't trust everything you read from Matt Cutts or other Google folks... it's all in the Testing!!!

Re: I'm Going For The First Page Of Google

Looks like Google made another big update to my rankings today. We've moved up to the first page for several keywords (homebuilders in cleveland...hadn't even thought of that one...kinda like targeting a misspelling) and we're now near the top of the 2nd page for several other big keywords on Google. At this rate it seems like it would only be another week or two for the big ones! Just need to move up a handful of spots to hit first page now for lots of them.

I see now that it's going to be more of a juggling act, in that the goal is to hit first page for multiple keywords. For me it's a good thing, since I thought we'd hit first page for one, and then have to work on the others over time later on down the road. So far there seems to be more 'carryover' than I thought for the different phrases. I thought if we focused on one phrase that it would be at the expense of others, but it seems to work the opposite so far. I wondered how some of my competitors (who weren't focusing on SEO) were doing it...now I'm starting to see.

Re: I'm Going For The First Page Of Google

Great job guys. I've been trying to figure this out for a few years now and I've got about 15 out of 20 of my targeted keyword phrases up onto the first page. Now I'm starting to develop some keyword loaded domains that I've been sitting on to fill in the gaps. I get SPAM everyday from these self proclaimed SEO experts telling me that they can do this and that for my site. I delete all of them because I always heard that these services are garbage. It's great to see that there are guys out there like Mike who can actually deliver. Keep up with the updates.

Re: I'm Going For The First Page Of Google

As of today, we're first page for Home builders in Cleveland on Google (around #8), and #5 for Bing! We're also #2 for the 'misspelling' homebuilders in cleveland. Almost all of the other keywords are around page 2 now as well. Even though this is the slowest time of the year for people looking for new homes, I'm excited to see what kind of traffic we start to pull in a few months once we've been 1st page for a while, and some of the other keywords start to come up too.

I guess Mike says these rankings will bounce around for a bit before they settle down, but so far it's been almost nothing but up, up, up.

Re: I'm Going For The First Page Of Google

Hey... just checking in on this... it's been exactly 2 weeks to the day since we started... Currently we sit at #7 for "Home Builders In Cleveland"... and are ranking pretty well for a lot of other keywords as well.

Links are still showing about 1250 or so... one of the reasons is that we've gone to building profile links this week and they tend not to be shown in Yahoo Site Explorer (most other tools pull from this resource)... although they are still very powerful for ranking purposes...

So, we've seen the site move up 6 spots or so this week... with our "invisible" link building method!!!

Still, we are only 2 weeks old... and I fully expect to run into some resistance before this is over... maybe even take a few backward steps temporarily... but the trend will remain up in the long run.

All in all... with our main keyword, we've gone from #65 to #7 in two weeks... I'll take it!

Will be interesting to see where we are this time next week... we'll move on to stage three of the link building process this week... which is slower... building some high PR links. Soon, it may be time to make a few little tweaks again with the on-page optimization, once we see how the week treats us!

Care to elaborate, I have in the last few weeks, I have posted anchor text links on about 30 pr5 and higher blogs with Linkluv, and CommerntLuv, and I have yet to see them reported on site explorer, could it be one of those not reported links that are still valued?

And what would be a better way to track this, Site explorer reads 90 links for me, from 0 a week ago, but Market S is still saying 39...

Just trying to see if my effort is working, I have noticed my rankings jump for the following

Pressure Washing Houston - Started at 37 now 6 in 2 weeks

Power Washing Houston - Started 56 now 11 in 2 weeks.

Also Im getting real frustrated with google places, Im listed in almost every small city, but cant get in in the houston one, When i was using a fake houston address i was ranked, but didn't want to get penalized so I deleted that one, and just kept our real address in sugar land, after following your advice, I did start ranking better, for everything, but still cant break the houston list.

John

Edit: I just noticed, for pressure washing houston, and power washing houston, Im not ranked in places, BUT if i enter pressure washing, and any of the zip codes in houston, BAM there i am, Not to sure if this is a good thing.

Re: I'm Going For The First Page Of Google

Hi John,

Sorry to take so long responding...

Your blog commenting links should show up in Yahoo Site Explorer... sometimes it does take awhile for Google to find and index them.

Are the pr5 blogs you're talking about... is that the PR of the page you're commenting on or the domain PR? There is a big difference. Usually, PR5 blog comments get indexed pretty quickly. It's possible you're commenting on blogs that do not allow bots to spider them. Thats becoming a bit more popular lately with all of the blog spamming that's going on... so in that case, they may never be indexed.

Profile links tend not to be indexed by Google (although some are), but still give the result you're looking for.

Google's tendency is not to respond to your link building efforts "immediately" anymore. The simple reason is because you would be able to test and find out EXACTLY what is moving the site in the SERPS! So, we're beginning to see a bit of a delay in link building to results time frame. But, that's ok... because with continued link building, the result will still come, they are still committed to that model, for now anyway.

With link building, that's what you need to look for. Are you getting the result? You can drive yourself crazy looking at link totals (I know, because I do), but the bottom line is, are you getting results over a reasonable period of time?

We tend to think, we build a link and that's it... but there is a lot of strategy to real link building. It is really a process that needs you to be relentless... always building, until the search engines finally respond! Sometimes that's after 20 links... sometimes after 5,000. It's not how many you build, its the result you see.

I know that's not much of an answer for you when you're frustrated... but consistency will pay off for you. Just keep doing it and the result will come.

I'd be happy to take a look at a few of the blog pages if you'd like, to make sure that everything is ok on them.

No Problem,

As far as the PR goes, the Blogs are actual PR 5's and the domains are more like 7, I understand that part of the process.

To be honest about 10 hours after I posted that question my links shot up to 125 and I was credited with 5 Pr 4 + links, SWEET!

As for the blogs, they are all do follow blogs, so I know eventually they will be reported. I am Patient as far as link building goes, im just frustrated with the local listing, I mean, I have DOMINATED sugar land, I have a few 1 boxes, and top ranked in several 7 boxes.

But Houston's not there, I may try a gray hat method with the Houston places, with some different information as a test run to see if it will gain traction, but i may wait on that.

The Sugar Land places account on the other hand has 15 citation, and within the next month or so will have 20 more plus 2 reviews, 10 pictures, 2 videos, and I have social Bookmarked all of my citations and soon to be citations, I have seen one other competitor rank for the Houston listing, with a non Houston address, so I know its possible, If what most of us think about google is right regarding looking for the most relevant information is true, then it wont be long before they see my listing as the most relevant.

Man I love SEO,

Ah and what I have been doing is pinging some of the more important blog posts, to speed the link process, but nothing to crazy to raise any flags

SEO makes my head explode!

I scratched and clawed my way to page 1 on a number of keywords...all of em using white hat methods and those at Google purged me.

This isn't over, Google, this isn't over by a long shot

Re: I'm Going For The First Page Of Google

Just a real quick update to commemorate the 3 week anniversary of beginning this project...

We are now at #4 for "Home builders in Cleveland"... and have moved up for all the other keywords as well.

Links have leveled off for now... although this week we'll hit the link building again with the anchor text "Cleveland Home Builders" and see if we can move that phrase as well.

This week we'll probably also "tweak" the on-page keyword density to see if we can have that support some additional keywords a bit better.

All in all a very productive 3 weeks... going from the mid-60's to #4. Ok, enough tooting my own horn... back to the trenches!

What exactly do you mean by purged me?

It's normal for a site to move up and down in the rankings but if you keep building links you will find over time the "Google Mood Swings" will not be quite so severe.

There are time I have ranked #1 for an article I posted for anywhere from 24 - 48 hours right after submitting it. That means that someone else was bumped out of the #1 spot for that period of time.

It's normal but frustrating. If you keep at it though you'll find you don't get dumped quite as often.

I rank real high for most painting related terms here in louisville. But I can't knock a footbridge media site off the top for my favorite search term. "painters louisville".

I own it locally, but am number 2 in googles organic returns. I only have around 200 backlinks though.

I'll try to load this image of page rank algorithm scaling. Shows the value of different PR backlinks and how many it takes to make your site climb.

I have no idea where I found that graphic, it's been a few years ago when I was first investigating the back link thing.

Question for the SEO guys... I ask because my site was always kind of small. But when I started really cranking out pages for it I seen it really going up in rankings. Does the overall amount of pages that a site has have a lot of effect on where you fall in SERPS?

Took a look at your site, you will be their eventually, you both have alot of similarities as far as back links go, but it wouldn't hurt you to build more, also he has a few Social bookmarks to his site, that is helping him that you dont.

Also his domain age is 6 years old, it wont be long before you over take him, your on page seo is good for the key terms, My only advice for you would be to build backlinks to you site with the key term as your anchor text, and you will be their in no time.

EDIT: Also he has almost double the indexed content than you, this helps majorly in the serps

To answer your question....yes the search engines like to see updated sites. Think of it this way...you walk into a store and you see the things they are selling...next week you go back in there and see the same stuff....6 months later you go back and still the same. Do you think you will continue to go back.

The search engines want to make sure the people who are searching find what they want...It is in their best interest if the sites they put on top show current and relevant information.

That being said you still have to continue to build backlinks to your site.

Hope this helps....
