Not To My Taste, But The Check Cleared. :)

And momma was ecstatic that she could finally clean it.

This floor had sentimental value & sanding off the paint lines was not an option. The young mans father & uncle salvaged this flooring from a school gym 25 years ago & laid it themselves. But it was never finished in all that time. Which made it nearly impossible to clean.

We run an orbital sander over it removing loose finish & abrading well enough for finish to adhere. Gave it a coat of shellac to make sure the poly wouldn't separate from wax contamination, then 2 coats of poly.

As I said, it's not to my taste & I wouldn't want it in my home, but I'm glad the client was pleased.

The boys been a bachelor in that house for too long. He's recently married & momma's gonna get him whipped into shape. It's just a matter of time before they go to the next level of making the place livable for a woman.

They found a decent quality hardwood. Doesn't look like they botched the install.

Man, how sweet that could look if they only let you do your thing!

Curious how much MORE it would have cost them to get the pro re-finish compared to the treatment they demanded?

% or per foot if you want to be discreet at to your specific rates.

Basically......how much did they save?

$1/sq ft. About $500 total savings. We sanded the reclaimed maple in the living room. It didn't have the paint lines like the kitchen. I didn't cut them a huge break for doing the kitchen, because I've gotta warranty the finish in the kitchen. CYA

In truth, it wouldn't have cleaned up that good. Those water stains where the finish was completely gone, would have still been stained.

Re: Not To My Taste, But The Check Cleared. :)

Some people just like the character. I have a friend that does restoration of museum pieces - violins, pianos, furniture, etc. When he bought his first old house (white pine floors), he grabbed a floor sander, went at it with something like 36 grit in somewhat random directions, then left it rough and epoxied it. It wasn't an accident, and it wasn't because he couldn't make it look nice, new, and glass smooth.

Different strokes....

Should have charged extra for the rustic look.

There aren't many things worse than having a lot of new looking wood with a bunch of defects like that. If you're leaving character, I think you leave as much as you can, and you did a great job of doing that, very little new wood showing.

We do a lot of "...messed up the job, save us!" work. Thinking just a little outside the box keeps things from getting boring.
