Help , New To Site ..... Need Help For Job

Hi just signed up, painter by trade.... asked to do stairwell repair in chicago to outside entrance. Wall is brick and old and risers have short nails used as support, code enforcement has sited owner and has made delay in repair a bad decision. Please inform me if at all possible what does code state as needed lenght and placement ? Also are supports needed ? Thanks
