I dont work under the influence ever. Ever ever.

Sometimes a helper will push to drink at lunch. I tell them they can do whatever they want but they won't be working if they have been drinking period.

Fired a good friend because he was sneaking beers at lunch. That guy didnt care about himself and certainly give a f about what would happen to me if he got injured while working for me drunk.

I can only remember drinking beer during a paid work day once. We were framing a house in Oak Ridge and my boss tossed me a beer, it was a Saturday. I probably sweated it out in 10 mins. Lol. I think I was 20.

When I was in my 20s I would drink beer while I worked on my own house or my friends houses for free, didn't bother me at all. Could drink and work all day.

Now? I get tired if I drink at all. Drinking does something different to me now, I guess it just triggers instant relaxation. LOL. When I built my house last year I probably drank too much during that time period, working 7 days a week and long days, a lot of projects and a lot of money moving around will do that to you sometimes, but I didn't drink while I was working, even doing punch list stuff just because it would sap my ambition. I keep a refrigerator full of beer in my shop, and I have some beer in my office refrigerator, the superintendent's that have a desk in there will often have a beer while they are filling out crew timesheets and doing meeting notes at the end of the day. The guys will grab a beer out of the refrigerator in the shop, they know better than to overdo it. When I had a lot of young kids I did not have the same mentality towards that stuff. I used to enjoy doing the same thing, but is not conducive with my lifestyle at this point.

S*** last week at a conference in New Orleans I had two beers with lunch in the hotel that conference was in and I was staying in.... I had to take notes and stand up often during the conference seminars that afternoon to not fall asleep in my chair. Lol

My friend and I used to go to Bills every other week or so around 1 on a Friday and have a couple beers and a burger and call it a day, I just cleaned my truck out and washed it Friday afternoons and organized my desk.

Now I pick my kid up Friday afternoons and go to the park before we go to my parents for dinner. It is a different time period In my life now, constantly have stuff with the kids on weekends and after work, so don't drink very often. So when I do it hits me hard. Me and my old man hit a casino while we were in New Orleans and we got pretty lit up, I don't even think I drink that much but it had been a while since I had drink before we went there, didn't help that we didn't eat beforehand. LOL.

Nothing better than a ice cold beer with a good mid-afternoon lunch to end the day though.

We had a bricklayer whose cousin work for us as a labor so we all called him cuz (Chris). This guy was a raging alcoholic and honestly would drink a whole case of beer a day....he would have 6 down by 9am.

He was normally a painter however would work with us once in a while when he was out of work and we needed help. we had a big project going on in the middle of the summer time so it was god awfully hot out and they would always back their 76’ Cadillac into the spot and open the gigantic trunk all day to block the view and I would see him walking around the car throughout the day and sure enough one time I was at the right angle and saw him slamming a beer.

He was a hell of a worker however by 730 in the morning the sweat and booze would be pouring out of him....friggin gross. Adding to the fact that his face was all scarred up from bar fights and everything else on top of a horrible case of ache, he was defiantly a one of a kind dude. Obviously we don’t allow drinking so his time with us was limited.

Unfortunately for Chris the alcohol got him and he died when he was in his mid40s without a pot to piss in. Luckily they found a church that was willing to do a free service for him so the wake and funeral service were about 40 minutes total.

Damm that guy could drink and his emotions and attitude would show it. That same job we were working on a Carpenter kept unplugging his radio (before the cordless stuff) to plug his saw in and it pissed cuz off so he went right up to the guy with the sweat pouring out of his face and yelled to him “if you ever unplug my radio again i swear to god I’ll f$*king kill you!!!” That wasn’t a good day because the carpenter called the cops on him.

But it sure made for one hell of a story and we laugh about it til this day

It’s funny you say that because that’s what we laugh about!

Remember that pussy ass carpenter that called the cops!!!! Hahaah Honestly the he was a skinny little sissy and talked like one too. It wouldn’t surprise me if his hammer swung the other way if ya know what I mean

But in all fairness Chris was one ugly, scary looking mofo. The type of guy that really meant that he was going to kill you! LoL

Back in the day up in Wisconsin, a beer or two or three with lunch was fairly common place. 'Nobody' thought much of it, really. A closer to liquid lunch on Friday was just a warm up for going out Friday night. LOL And it was not just the young bucks, at lunch anyway. Most bars were filled with Masons "eating lunch", not so many Carpenters tho.

Got f'up at lunch tho ... :censored: they'd ride your a$$ hard and get all the crap jobs. Made a habit of it bye bye good to know ya ....

Different place, even back then, and time for sure. Hard to wrap my mind around zero tolerance, but today liability and customer relations ain't ever going back.

.

Bricklayers were famous for drinking on the wall, it’s not uncommon to find beer cans in the walls while doing demo.

A guy that used to work for us would keep them and he had a pretty nice collection of old beer cans

Still don’t know how they did it because I will tell you one beer for me and I’m done. No more work for the day

Beer and power tools don’t usually mix well :)

My uncle used to drink all day at work remodeling kitchens and bathrooms. Coffee from 5am- 9, beer from 9- get home, then wine till pass out. He called it “Beer diet” and swore he saw the idea in Men’s Health magazine. He and his adult children helpers had code words for it, poured the beer into ordinary containers, you get the picture, all the signs of a heavy drinker.

He ended up in the hospital last summer with high blood pressure and a mini stroke. Maybe the health nuts are right ;)

Back in the mid 70’s I was a Structural steel fabricator/welder.
We would hit the bar at lunch.
We ordered a table of draft.
They were set up when we arrived.
We would pound as many as we could , and then go back to work. About two blocks away.
No one was ever concerned.
Now, zero tolerance. If I smell alcohol, you are going home. A ride if necessary.
I won’t touch alcohol until the tools go down.
The times have changed.
