Glass House Demolition
Hi guys wonder if you can help please?
A customer want a 30' x 30' glass house demolished. Am i better of smashing all the glass and squashing the frame with a digger or taking the glass out by hand and grinding the frame? Thanks in advance James Cherry Last edited by GardenDoctors; 10-12-2009 at 04:31 PM. |

Re: Glass House Demolition
Talk to a few glass shops. You may have something they would buy. In general, glass is not cheap.

Re: Glass House Demolition
I have found the resale of glass to be difficult, i would remove all the glass neatly, and stack in a container dedicated to the glass, then go after the frame, if its aluminum, $ in. If you just plow into this thing, you will make a mess that will keep you busy cleaning up for days ,G

Re: Glass House Demolition
tell the owner to throw the stones!
i would take it out in full pieces if possible if not, i would get a roll of carpet shield, it's like a giant roll of Scotch tape, put it over the glass and break. this should make a much smaller mess and be easier to control |

Re: Glass House Demolition
Most residential & commercial demolition I have done & seen done by others, involves the glass & other junk being removed before the toys come out. I would hate to have to clean up all those slivers of glass, much less think about it. Even if all the dirt was being removed afterwords, you would have to take it all to a dump because it would be a lawsuit waiting to happen otherwise.
Is there a recycling place nearby that would accept the glass? |

Re: Glass House Demolition
There's a good possibility that the glass is tempered and if you had to break it, it would explode into tiny, harmless pieces. That would make it pretty easy to deal with. Nevertheless, I would try to find a buyer for the whole system if at all possible, before destroying it.

Re: Glass House Demolition
We had an eccentric old guy that did window repair. After about 60 years he had tons of old glass and windows. He died and the town went in to clean up, but the state shut them down and declared it a hazardous waste issue. They had to hire a special contractor for big $$ to clean it up.

Re: Glass House Demolition
The glass can most likely be sold/used for another project. Glass handrail? those look nice on modern houses, but it is a pain to move it all and store it. I recently tore a deck off of a waterfront house, but they asked us to disassemble it. We used at least 20 moving blankets to pad it, and took about 2 hours to disassemble it fully. Once you get the glass out though, go to town! If you use a a track-hoe with a rake instead of a bucket(I find this very handy for demos) which a bucket attachment, except it's a thumb, if that makes sense. You can pick up a lot of stuff without picking up dirt. But using one of those would make it easy to take care of all of the frame.
