I've had success hitting the top of the block with a sledge hammer (where the webbing is-not at the hollow section). The key would be to hit at the top of the block...also consider a 16" wide 4x4 placed against the block, to spread out the force when hitting-still at the top of the block :-) I have demo'ed an old block (80 + years) and b/c of it's age, it had to mostly be broken apart piece by piece.
