Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

Holy Testosterone! lol . If you don't mind I would like to pull us back to the topic. When blasting with glass on body panels did you use a special nozzel, what pressure, what size blast hose and compressor?
I did how ever tell one of my customers that has had some of his cars blasted with soda about the whole viniger thing, he said he's not had any problems just putting a good apoxy primer on it right after it has been blasted. He has never heard of the 50/50 thing....

What kind of compressors are you guys using, any of you use an electric compressor. The ratings for the cfm, and psi are different for electric and gas powered and I don't know how to convert the power/pressures

I run a number 4 nozzle with 1 1/2" line and a 210 cfm diesel compressor. I just move quick and hold the nozzle at and angle. If it doesnt come off with the first swipe I may have to swipe over it two or three times. I blasted at 70 psi and didnt get any warpage. I just did a CJ7 hood yesterday the same way without any warpage. I rub my hand around during blasting to feel the heat to, if I feel hot spots I move alittle quicker.

Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

Thanx Jakkel, I will keep experimenting till I get it cause it would save me alot of time compared to walnut.
Sorry Panderson, I wasn't around ; however I would love to chat more about blasting.
My customer came to check out his Charger we just finished, he said we did great. I still think I may have under charged him. 1200. We blasted all the panels, the rest of the shell, scraped and blasted the engine bay. It seemed to take us forever! After about 2 hrs we keep getting moisture at the bottom of the pot. I have to look into getting better dryers.
We have a 69 Camero come'n Monday morning, we have a few little jobs to do this weekend.
By the way, noone told me what they think about useing soda in a traditional abraisive/media blasting pot. Can you do that?

Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

Mediajunky, I don't know what to say about your expierence with the glass. I use about 60 psi with 40/70 glass with my 185. I really don't seem to be messing anything up with it. I certainly don't actually see ripples and those customers have not reported any incidents. I do try to spread the blasting out ofcourse, back and forth so as not to build up heat in any one spot. You could try a finer glass but in the end if you need to take off rust you have no choice but to use some abrasive.

I didn't know vinigar could be bad for paint work. I have a vette guy who says he never has a paint problem after soda and others who sware it will destroy a job if not cleaned right. I figure it isn't my concern. I ask them which media they would like and if they choose soda I inform that that there may be a cleaning issue. It's up to them as a painter to read up and decide.

I think you won't be able to meeter a traditional pot down enough to be cost efective. I guess all you can do is throw a bag in and see how it goes. I think every pot would be different. Do you use soda now in a pot so that you have somthing to compare it to?

Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

I talked with my brother about glass verses plastic and soda today. We both believe without out further council. When you blast cars on auto steel you can see where the mud is, soda leaves the grind marks as does plastic media. This leaves the evidence of past body work. I have blasted a huge amount of cars. Before crushed glass this was clear on every car we did. After crushed glass and coal slag by products we began to remove the grinder marks. I began to have customers claiming warpage. I started to take pictures and have pre blast,,got to go bed time for the kids

Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

I agree with you about the whole leaving the cleaning up to the painter. That is not my area. I have a 69 Camero to do and the custumer would like me to lightly dust the car with the glass to etch the surface a bit to save him so sanding, then I think I will get back to blasting panels (scrap)with the glass. I will try a bigger nozzel.
As for the soda, I haven't tried putting it in my pot yet. I have a 100lb and a 600lb pot. I might give it a go in the little one. If it works I would have alot of business in this area. If not I may have to put out a few bucks before I can make some. Do you guys know what price range I would be looking at for the soda itself ?
Ant other suggestions you might have are very welcome, and thanks for your help this far.

I pay 23 a bag for the natrium 260. And I think 25 for the 300 which is better for boats. I pick it up my self so that is with out shipping.

Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

I managed to blast a panel (van hood) today with glass. I use a syphon blastor with a bit bigger orfice bringing down the pressure, so I'm good to go with the 1940 Ford pickup. I can't wait. Do you guys recycle your abraisives, if so where do you get your screens? right now we just use a strainer, it works but I would like to work toward getting something a bit more time effective.
I still want to give that soda a shot in my pot....lol that sounds funny.

Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

I tried to upload pics but no luck. I blasted a 67 Charger with walnut shells, did all the panels and the shell,(hood , doors, trunk, and fenders in and out) and charged 1200.00 for everything. I was probably too cheap, but didn't have any idea what to charge and didn't want to be too expensive cause we needed the work. Good job in the pic. Do you think I was too cheap?(don't forget I'm in Canada.....lol)

Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

Did you blast the boat in your pic? what is it made of? I was reffering to Goodreau Steel Boats. They are made of steel with a Satin coat for rust protection. The walnut takes the paint off and leaves the satin coat in tact. I have not tried a fiberglass boat.

Mediajunky
I used soda on the one in my pic there but I have used a lot of walnut too. It works about the same on the fiberglass. Leaves it a little roughened up. I use about 4 to 6 bags on 20 to 24 footers.

I guess it depends on how much you used. I like to get about $80. a bag for soda or walnut. If you used around 15 bags it's what I might have charged. I wish I get a twice that but unless you become the guy or gal "to go to" in your area I find people have very low expectations on the price.

Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

Mediajunky how much CFM do you have Most of us have 200CFM or more you said earlier that you had 35cfm are you using piston compressor or a small rotary screw? I plan on going out in the desert where I know some junk cars have been for years pull some parts of to practice on with glass. The local junk yards charge too much for this stuff. I agree with you that warping is a rear fear of mine. I was told it isn't the heat that warps it it's the pinging of course heat is generated by pinging the metal. I need to get some thin metal and see how it gets warped. How thin of metal is car body's?

Re: What Do You Guys Charge To Blast A Car

Kell 490 If you know where a bunch of old cars are out in the desert you may want to salvage them. If you dont own the land or the cars ask to take a few hoods and deck lids, tell them you are trying some new blasting tech. on the stuff. Old cars in the desert no matter how rough could be a treasure. Post the pics of what they are. If you need free tins to practice on go to any auto body. Tell them your starting a stripping company and you need a couple of fenders to practice on. Tell them you will bring them back so they can get the scrap price out of the steel and they will also get to see your work, its a win win. While every car guy is cheap they also love to talk cars and see new stuff. Dont get discouraged if you run into some pricks because you will
