Weird

So I get a call during my lunch break on my 9-5 asking if this was "Abrasive Solutions" which is what I go by. I said yes, and he told me he wanted a quote on getting five old 16" Jeep wheels blasted and possibly primed. Since I'd have to borrow a cabinet from my buddy and ask my neighbor about the priming in his booth, I told him I'd call him back tomorrow with a quote. My buddy owes me for some computer work I did for him and my neighbor owes me for letting him borrow my blasting rig to do a truck frame 2 weekends ago. Anyway, I got his name and phone number and we got to talking. Turns out, him and I work for the same company, which we both thought was quite odd. When I'm not offsite (which I have been for over a year), his office is a few doors down from mine.

While you're reading, any ideas on what I should charge for this? I really figure the use of both the cabinet blaster and the booth will be free because both my friend and my neighbor owe me. I'll have money in paint thinner to clean the rims after blasting and money in the primer to prime them and some gas in running back and forth to the cabinet. I can walk to the paint booth. Is $30 per wheel (blasted and primed) too much or not enough? Let me know. Any suggestions on primed vs. not primed?

Re: Weird

i think anywhere from $30 - $50 would be fair. Since it's a jeep I'd be willing to bet there's a lot more rusty bits to blast if he likes your work.

Did he say how he got your name and number? It's always good to know for future advertising.

Re: Weird

I did e-mail him and ask him how he found me after I posted. He said he typed in Sandblast Chambersburg and the local business listing was the first link. He clicked on that and Abrasive Solutions was the top link on the page. Good for me I guess. My problem is now that I talked to my buddy Phil who has the blast cabinet and he's a little worried about how the rims will fit in his cabinet...or if they'll fit at all. I can't hardly rent a compressor because that's $80/day so there goes any profit. I guess I'll just try the cabinet and see if it works.

Re: Weird

Just charge more..
$30.00 per wheel with primer? You do offer a specialty service, local, and I assume will do a quality job. Unless you want to give him a "Good Old Boy" hook up, why not charge more. It is a business. Blasting is dirty work, and can be dangerous, not many people do it for a reason. Ever had a accident while blasting?

Are you going to spray rustolium or apply something else? You have time, materials, plus labor. How long do you think you will be working on 4 wheels from the first time you pick one up to work on, to the last bit of paint is applied?
